How to get pets?

Just bought the new DLC, but I have no idea where to get the pets. I thought they'd be part of the new game character creation screen, but nothing popped up. I've tried unchecking/rechecking the DLC in the Manage DLC screen and nothing. I just uninstalled/reinstalled the game with DLC checked and still nothing.

I just want a pet. :(

Edit: Solved by enabling mods in the settings menu. Seems obvious, now.

At the screen where you choose your name, there's an option to select the pet

I see. Unfortunately I think i'll have to trick Steam into actually downloading it.

Okay, I solved this. In the options menu, make sure you have "Enable Mods" checked. I didn't realize the DLC counted as a mod. We're good now.

Yeah, it even appears in the in-game mod menu.

Yeah, it's implemented as an official mod. (and can be disabled via that window if you want to)

I've supported the game on Patreon and previously had all the pets. How can I get them back?

uninstall and reinstall was the fix for me
