FPS death is a common issue in late game for those types of games.
SS13 works on everything i've ever owned lmao
-TOME ( Tales of Maj'Eyal : on steam )
-Rift Wizard 1&2 ( Steam )
-CDDA ( Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead : free )
And probably many others that I'm forgetting but it's a good start
It’s a turn based, open world, traditional Roguelike RPG, like Caves of Q u d, but it is fantasy, not science fiction / science fantasy.
This sort of limited permadeath option is present in The Doors of Trithius, where death takes you back to your last position on the world map, with the game automatically saving when you hit the open world map travel screen, and at the last traveled stair as well.
It’s as if death never happened; merely a vision of a possible series of events that did not occur in this reality. It’s all just a bad dream adventurer…
This is very good, as hardcore permadeath can be a tough sell for many players in a very large open world RPG, where a death can means many, many hours of lost progress!
And if you don’t care for that feature, the dev plans to add an optional hard-core / permadeath mode.
It’s fair, as Doors of Trithius is still early access after all, so it is a nice compromise in case of unexpected bugs. I have not come across any like that in my current 22 hours in game, but better safe than sorry here.
Like in the classic Elder Scrolls games like DaggerFall, Morrowind, Oblivion, and even Skyrim, your character makes progress towards a lvl up by exercising their skills.
Like Blades, or Axes, or Medicine, Botany, or Cooking, and you put points into each Weapon Mastery and Skill as they increase, choosing which of the many active and passive options tied to each one you want.
Stacking accuracy or bleed chance with blades?
Unlock a whirlwind type attack at a high energy cost?
Maybe choose Botany to identify and harvest forest herb and mushrooms absent accident, and ready to fuel your Medicine and Alchemical potion creation? You choose!
Unlock more cooking recipes, or save up for a chance to double each meal prepared?
In short: If you do a thing that uses a skill, that skill increases. Get enough increases, then nap and lvl.
And like in Caves of Qud, you have a wide Open World that is Procedurally Generated, full of Forests to hunt and gather goodies, Caves to creep around if you’re feeling bold, and Dungeons to cleanse and loot. So much to Explore! So much to Fight, and Find and Strengthen your Character! So Good!
So what say you Hero?
Shall you help shape the future?
Shall you stand against the shadow in this old school, Top Down, Turn Based, RPG adventure?
Or rise as a new dread specter to cloak the world in your will? C
limb the tower, Crack the Door, and find out.
Intense, Top Down, Dungeon Crawler, Action Awaits! Onward Hero!
Watch, and see the Immersive, Indie, Open World CRPG Turn Based Action?

Here are a few other traditional(ish) rouge-likes that are also great (and should run on a potato):
* Cataclysm DDA (free)
* Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (free)
* TOME (steam)
* ADOM (steam / free)
* Cogmind (steam)
* Keeper RL (steam / free ASCII)
* Elona+ (free)
* Dungeons of Dreadmor (steam)
Honourable mention to Tangledeep (steam) made by the same people that brought us CoQ if I'm not mistaken. I personally bounced off of it, but it looks like there is a fair bit of depth to enjoy there.
free and a great fantasy based Roguelike
Doors of Trithius is a good fantasy roguelike in EA that's a little more similar to CoQ in terms of generally streamlined play with quests.
TOME is great for running specific builds and theory crafting but isn't really like a sandbox experience that CoQ has with the massive map with RNG.
You missed Nethack!!
