In the future you can deal with this a few ways:
1) force bracelet -> recoil (this is what I use)
2) eat yondercane (free one in the Stilt) to teleport back to stairs
3) long range nightvision to see them from farther away so you can decide to bail to stairs
4) Pop salve injector to help give more time to race to stairs
5) always play truekin with good ranged attacks so you can attack the legendary seeker of the sightless way
6) fear (from menacing stare) and confusion (from flashbang) break sunder mind

1. any way to leave the screen interrupts sunder mind
2. grenades the usually squishy enemy (flash bangs do confusion and instantly interrupt)
3. run around with a meal with spine fruit jam (any reflect damage interrupts sunder mind)
Forgot to add that recoilers can also work without force wall, since they "in combat" check does not actually have anything to do with combat happening, but checks the walkable distance to enemies. If there are reachable enemies (no walls) withing range 8 or so, you can't recoiler. If they are further away and currently shooting at you or similar, you can recoil.
