Auto Attacking walls.
This never happened before. Any time I walk into any obstruction, I automatically make attacks against it, and so do my followers, who then stand there forever attacking it.

I looked through the options but I didn't see anything that looks like it would govern that, but I suspect I probably missed it.

Can anyone help me out?

you have burrowing claws enabled, or have a pickaxe/other digging tool

One of the True Kin classes starts out with a nanopneumatic jackhammer, which will also cause this behavior.

I found one of those, that's what it is! Thanks! First time I've seen it, so had no idea that's what it did.
