Can you buy new powers after creation?
I'm very new to the game, from what I understand you can upgrade mutations with points you gain from level ups, but can you buy *new* ones that you don't currently possess?

For example, I chose Beguile and I've been having fun with that but I think I'd like it even better if I also had Dominate. Can I gain Dominate later, or would I have to start over?

If you save up 4 mutation points, you'll get the ability to buy a new mutation. You'll be given 3 random ones to choose from, so it's tricky if you're looking for a very specific one. This is why the "esper" and "chimera" mutations exist; if you take one of them, you can limit your possible mutations to only mental or physical.

When creating a mutant character, there's a section called "Morphotypes." By default, you are none of these morphotypes, meaning you can pick any of the mutations and a defect from either the Physical or Mental list. Once you create a character and launch your run, at level up, you gain 1 Mutation Point. When you accrue 4 of them, you may purchase a new mutation. You get 3 mutations to choose from and they're (as far as I can tell) random, so you're not guaranteed to get a mutation you want. To access this, you have to access your character sheet (by default this is the X button) and the option to learn a new mutation should be there (I think the button's M?)

Those Morphotypes I mentioned? These determine what mutations you can pick. The first two are basically filters. If you pick Chimera, you can only get physical mutations. This is reflected in "graying out" the mental mutations and defects lists. Esper is the opposite where you can only get mental mutations. During your run, when using your mutation points to buy a new skill, if you have Chimera or Esper as your morphotype, mutations that are incompatible with that morphotype won't be available in the pool of choices.

If you're looking for instability in your life, look no further than the Unstable Genome. Under morphotypes, you can select this alongside Chimera or Esper and every time you level up, you have a 33% to learn a new skill WITHOUT spending Mutation Points. This is banking on luck though, since Unstable Genome costs 3 points at start, which means you'll have at least one less mutation you can start with.

If you ever run into the item Eater's Nectar, when a mutant character uses it, they can gain a random attribute point or a mutation point. Eater's Nectar is a bit uncommon and they're expensive if you find someone willing to sell you it, so don't count on these for mutation points.

If you ever gain significant reputation with the Seekers of the Sightless way, you can spend a variable amount of reputation to gain a mental mutation from the legendary character you're talking to.

Very informative, thank you both for the replies!

I died to a giant amoeba basically the moment I went down some stairs, so looks like I'll just have to make a new character.

Unstable Genome only works for a single mutation. That's why you can put multiple points into it. It's basically gambling to get high cost mutations for cheap, at the disadvantage you won't actually get to use them for a while.

Welcome to Qud! Same happened to me, although I just bumbled into a fricking bear at level 1.

I encountered a bear right away on my next character too, but it ended up being a good thing. Beguiled it, bear the proceeds to massacre dozens of snapjaws. Nice.

I encountered a Snapjaw Warlord and was tempted to swap to it, but I was worried the Bear would kill us both afterwards.

A Beguiled follower will turn hostile again when you replace them with someone else. Love Injector works just like Beguile. When the Love Injector buff wears off, they will go hostile again. Be VERY careful if you waterbond with someone you Beguile or Love Inject. You WILL become an oath-breaker if you kill them while they try to attack you.

If you know Proselytize, followers that get replaced won't go hostile once they leave your party. Even if that individual is part of a hostile faction, they will be friendly to you when you swap them for another follower.

Good to know, thank you.
