Those Morphotypes I mentioned? These determine what mutations you can pick. The first two are basically filters. If you pick Chimera, you can only get physical mutations. This is reflected in "graying out" the mental mutations and defects lists. Esper is the opposite where you can only get mental mutations. During your run, when using your mutation points to buy a new skill, if you have Chimera or Esper as your morphotype, mutations that are incompatible with that morphotype won't be available in the pool of choices.
If you're looking for instability in your life, look no further than the Unstable Genome. Under morphotypes, you can select this alongside Chimera or Esper and every time you level up, you have a 33% to learn a new skill WITHOUT spending Mutation Points. This is banking on luck though, since Unstable Genome costs 3 points at start, which means you'll have at least one less mutation you can start with.
If you ever run into the item Eater's Nectar, when a mutant character uses it, they can gain a random attribute point or a mutation point. Eater's Nectar is a bit uncommon and they're expensive if you find someone willing to sell you it, so don't count on these for mutation points.
If you ever gain significant reputation with the Seekers of the Sightless way, you can spend a variable amount of reputation to gain a mental mutation from the legendary character you're talking to.
I died to a giant amoeba basically the moment I went down some stairs, so looks like I'll just have to make a new character.
Welcome to Qud! Same happened to me, although I just bumbled into a fricking bear at level 1.
I encountered a Snapjaw Warlord and was tempted to swap to it, but I was worried the Bear would kill us both afterwards.
If you know Proselytize, followers that get replaced won't go hostile once they leave your party. Even if that individual is part of a hostile faction, they will be friendly to you when you swap them for another follower.
Good to know, thank you.
