Depending on where the infection occurs & if you even have anything you would rather be using the infection could be pretty useful.
The hoarfrost shrooms that I assume you are referring to are nice as well as mumble mouth for getting free lore & location info every now & then.
Other infections are just bad such as the tongue rot one that renders you unable to speak to shop keepers, iron shanks that immobilizes you after awhile to name a few.
I *do* wish there was an easier (if expensive) way to cure them in game (no wishing for me!) to cure them as my character isnt into "organics".
I think of them as a neutral inconvienience.
I wish I realised this before I marched into Erza with couple of them on me to go buy something.
Moments later the whole village was on fire and all my stuff I stored in chests nearby that merchant went up in flames. But it was hilarious learning experince even if bit disheartening.
