There are gonna be a vast amount of results plus those awkward folk like me that are going to post something obscure just to be cool and whacky.
With that in mind.
Ant Attack on my ZX spectrum.
Recent games?
Prey
all sorts of flight and driving simulators (not racing)(modded)
Skyrim (modded)/ Fallout Modded
Half Life Alyx (for the art direction, the storyline and gameplay is meh) but locations and setting are super if small and linear.
Minecraft (modded)
The Battlefield games are great to just switch off in if one doesnt take them with any level of authenticity. Hugely helped me get over the death of my father although I developed painful RSI due to my extended bouts.
FTL (modded)
Some roguelike where foolishly water is a currency and the setting is plagiarised from a bunch of other sources and the devs are apparently hippie furry kink communists, the name escapes me for the moment.
Also modded.
For me, in the main, a modded experience is vital as I like my games *my* way, there are a few which I play vanilla and those I do, i usually wish I could modify in some small way.
For Caves of Qud an ingame sprite creator (for my character alone) would engage me for *EONS*.
i like putting my little mark on/in games.
True, But I think the type of player that has found and loved QUD will have some interesting thoughts on the subject so I think of it as leveraging those who have similar tastes and to see where that leads. Its all about finding good games from good people who have a similar nature... So when I really like a game I like to find out what others who really like it find worth their time.
btw, nice list
Tell me more.
export for others and perhaps a save to game so we can replace / improve existing sprites.
obviously, when I say "simple" I mean simple for us, not the devs :)
Just like COQ in many ways, but it's more heavy on inventory management.
You are a robot upgrading itself with parts, so skills come from that, not per seh leveling.
Leveling gives you more slots to attach parts.
Plus same visual vibes, simple yet with many beautifull animations in certain situations.
Yeah go play Cogmind. This and COQ are both amazing games.
will show you how to get it
UnReal World - Came out in 1992, still gets updates regularly.
Rimworld - hands down the BEST GAME ON STEAM.
Avorion or Star Traders Frontiers - if you like outer space but still want a game where 2
playthru are not the same
FoxHole - if you want a good MMO
Cyberpunk 2077 - if you want a great story
Mount And Blade - horses and swords
and i would say Atlas but.....THE DEVS ♥♥♥♥♥♥ THAT GAME UP
so i guess that leaves you with just ARK.
My personal treat these days is Library of Ruina. The art direction and the storytelling are outstanding, and the gameplay is fantastic too, if a bit difficult toward the end. Big fat 100+hours of lifespan.
Cultist Simulator is great if you enjoy well-done "reading" games. The screenshots don't do it justice, this game pulls you down the rabbit hole in the best possible ways. If you ever wanted to play as a Seeker of the Sightless Way, this game is basically exactly that.
Battle Brothers. Just buy it. Buy it now.
Dead Cells and Ultrakill if you like your gaming sessions to get your adrenaline pumping.
AoE2DE if you would rather play a videogame than learn to play the piano.
Don't ever play League of Legends.
Edit : I forgot to mention a little gem that's free on Steam and very short (I finished it in less than 3 hours and that's counting the fact that I prepared & ate dinner while playing). : If On a Winter's Night Four Travellers.
It's a point&click but oh man the story is fantastic. It felt almost like watching a movie, but it was a great movie, I didn't have to pay for my seat, and I didn't have to wear a mask the whole time.
My next two posts will have my exceedingly long rant on RPG gaming that contains a good list of games I found that I find interesting and worth time to look into.
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, Dwarf Fortress Adventure mode(Though if you like this Fantasy Monarch is DF Adventure mode Lite), Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead(story generators are awesome), Wizardry and Might And Magic Grid Based RPG series(wish they were more like Elder Scrolls or Dragon Age or Mass Effect and maybe a little easier but kept the good parts of them, though they are pretty epic in their own right and they have the best exploration and discovery of any game I have played) are all interesting.
Stellaris is great but a steep learning curve, though it is the best grand strategy that I have played(Other than a possible World OF Darkness Grand Strategy From Paradox Which I Have High Hopes For). Cultist Simulator is loads of fun if you can get past the lack of info and the trial and error aspect of learning it. Also, for short run games card battlers like Erannorth Reborn are awesome. I have been loving autobattlers like Astronarch, Outcasts of Orion, Hadean Tactics, and Tavern of Gods.
The Gothic and Risen and Elex Games are very well done And Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines is a must play.
Mount And Blade Warband Is the best sandbox I have played and though a little tough to get into have to mention it.
The Dragon Age Games are on my best list.
I have been toying around with Fallout 76 and Red Dead Redemption Online both of which have problems but I am still finding them fun in there own way.
I can also recommend Sentinels Of Freedom, and The Outer Worlds both of which, so far, have been awesome and I say Cyberpunk 2077 which has a great feel to it so far, feels like the Pen And Paper RPG for the most part, from a lore perspective, even though it does not have all the classes and skills and abilities Of The Pen And Paper Game to play with like I had hoped, but I knew that from the previews, though I really wanted to effect and explore the lore and world with each archetype, I wanted it to play alot more like the Pen And Paper RPG and relive those RPG experiences or to recapture the Pen And Paper Experience in general which it doesn't. It is not bad, once you reset expectations, to a Deus Ex clone perspective. It is just not an RPG let alone the RPG we wanted...
I recently got Warsim The Realm Of Aslona(pretty epic so far and it gets alot of love from the developer, I have also heard that it was inspired by Dwarf Fortress), Also got Sanctuary RPG Black Edition and Data Hacker R3b00t, Data Hacker Corruption, Data Hacker Initiation, as well as Battle Brothers, Kingdoms(By Oreol), Elder Sign: Omens, Gaia Beyond, Space Haven, Stellar Tactics, Crying Suns, Space Rogue, Star Traders Frontiers, Deeps Sky Derelicts, Fighting Fantasy Legends(and most of the other fighting fantasy gamebooks but this is the best one so far) and Dungeons Of Chaos(You can have some fun builds), Sands Of Salzaar(It's Mount And Blade Light but with magic, overall enjoyable and I feel like a real character in it.), Amazing Cultivation Simulator(It's like Rimworld), Silmaris: Dice Kingdom(Excellent), Shadow Empire, Starcom: Nexus, Secret Government, Ruinarch, Godhood, Dreamscaper, The Technomancer, Satellite Reign, Underrail, ATOM RPG: Post-apocalyptic indie game, Stygian Reign of the Old Ones, Transcendence, Lawless Lands, Code Vein, Sol Trader, Wizard king, Masquerada: Songs and Shadows, Artificer: Science of Magic, Quantum Protocol, Chronicon, Re-Legion, The Labyrinth, Shores Unknown, Rift Wizard, Dicey Dungeons(Excellent), One Deck Dungeon, De'Vine: Card Battles, De'Vine: World of Shadows, Last Dream, Last Dream: World Unknown, Eschalon: Book I, Eschalon: Book II, Eschalon: Book III, The Book of Legends, Emperium, Dungeon No Dungeon, DREAMGATE, Dungeonmans, Horizon's Gate, Alvora Tactics, Voidspire Tactics, Exiled Kingdoms, Weaves of Fate, Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs, Battle Chasers: Nightwar, Godking: Master of Rituals and so far they are all interesting and am looking forward to more playtime with them.
Been meaning to try out Grim Dawn, Book Of Demons, Guild of Dungeoneering, Legend of Keepers: Career of a Dungeon Master, and Guildmaster: Gratuitous Subtitle, Angel Made, Avalom: Ancestral Heroes, Dungeons of Edera, Ashes of the Night, Wormskull but just haven't got around to it, maybe soon I will try them out and see if there any good.
I have played alot of RPGs, loved them, and they were great but they didn't really play like a Pen And Paper RPG and I am looking to relive those RPG experiences or to recapture the Pen And Paper Experience in general which I am not finding yet. Alot are close to Pen and Paper RPG Mechanics, which I love, but still not capturing the Pen and Paper experience. The RPG experience is also more than just dungeon romps and quests, which most Video Game RPGs basically are.
The only ones I have found that have the PnP RPG Feel so far are the Shadowrun games.
Wizardry and Might And Magic Grid Based RPG series(wish they were more like Elder Scrolls or Dragon Age or Mass Effect and maybe a little easier but kept the good parts of them, though they are pretty epic in their own right) from back in the day sort of fit what I am looking for(They have the best exploration and discovery of any game I have played) as well as Dragon Age Games, Mass Effect Games, The Witcher Games and Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen to greater or lessor degrees also. The single player Elder Scrolls Games and Fallout Games aren't bad either for what they are they just aren't tabletop PnP quality.
NeverWinter Nights series isn't bad either.
All of them have a start of that feel but none really capture it as well as I would like. There are some that have the PnP RPG mechanics and do that well enough, I do love making a great set of characters and working on builds and such but that is not all that makes up a good Table Top Game. Hard to explain but I think this is a start to what I am looking for; though I really wanted to effect, explore and discover the lore and world with each archetype/class with all the abilities, skills, powers, etc... so maybe that is also part of it. RPGs are getting to decide who you want to be and to decide what kind of things you can do not only with your character but in the game world, which seems more important to me. So if you have any suggestions of what I might have missed or where to go from here it would be appreciated...
I have been meaning to play the Divinity Games as well as Pillars of Eternity and Deadfire which I have heard are good as well. I have been meaning to try Tyranny and The Age of Decadence also as I hear good things about them. Pathfinder Kingmaker is supposed to be very RPG like so there is that. Also the Spiderweb Software Inc. games come highly recommend and I have yet to try them out so that is what I found to try so far.
Starcom Nexus, Stellar Tactics and Endless Sky have there moments that I enjoyed and are sort of RPGlike.
Gaia Beyond and Space Haven are early access but have loads of potential and are also RPGlike.
As a side note: Whatever happened to the Fun Gameplay In Video Games? It seems to be all about the best builds for success and not being gimped and not about what you can do and imagine about your characters. To me it should not be too real or working with what you have but it should be about the Fantasy and going way beyond reality and doing cool stuff with fun powers and abilities and skills... Aka you should be making character choices based on a feeling of wanting to play that type of character so I would try to make it less about the mechanics but about making the character you fantasize about playing. Any good finds in regards to this? Or Any Games were you can have fun builds and/or groups? As an example of what I consider Fun Gameplay and the only one I have found that scratches the itch is Dungeons Of Chaos; it has some fun builds and groups but doesn't go far enough, better graphics are nice but not required and if they are first/third person and not isometric that would be of interest also. I am looking for any thoughts and a nice variety so I intentionally left it vague where I should have given my example to lead the question but feel free to keep it open.
I have tried some Online PnP Games and I have found them lacking.
Many people leave the games or don't respond in a timely fashion and the game folds.
Many people are too caustic online.
Difficult to find a well done game; too many are just uninteresting to me.
Overall I haven't enjoyed them online and not enough interest in Face To Face RPGs exists for me.
Plus I really love playing Video Games and haveing AI companions and interacting with Developed worlds; but though I have found alot of epic games I have yet to scratch the Pnp RPG itch so I am always looking.
