Some of the special effects are inspired by the ASCII graphics many roguelikes still sport today. There used to be ASCII graphics for Qud in the older builds. Not sure if you can still play Qud with those anymore.

Custom shader suite too. You can edit a few of these - scanline colours, intensity, radius in one of the config files and add your own such as SweetFX or similar probably. It all looks brilliant; a wonderful game.

The very original build of CoQ is still available online somewhere iirc, and it uses full ASCII graphics. Lacks most of the features we're familiar with, but it's playable.

I guess you could call it an 8-bit art style. It reminds me the NES or MSX.
