Won't be any easier to learn with mods.
As for content mods, I think you'd do best to avoid them until you've found something you don't like about the base game and a mod that fixes them. At least during pre-release the base game is going to have bugs enough of its own, and change so rapidly that content mods get broken often even if they once worked perfectly.
The Chesthole tile set is worth checking out, but it is not immune to the problems I outline above...
try turning them on and then after a while just rely on saved games once you have the hang of things.
