Today I met a Madpole
This is my first solid run, just playing as a big beefy cudgley guy (found a Crysteel Hammer way early on and have been happy to just keep swinging it). Readied up to head to Bethesda Susa for the first time, but decide to go try and help out an agitated goat warden. See Madpoles for the first time, and I'm level 19 so I'm like "Pshh" and start clubbing, Crysteel in one hand and electrified Carbide in the other. One- or two-hit a few of them, feeling good, when suddenly there are red messages and blood is everywhere and I am lacking feet, a face, and both of my good cudgel-swinging arms.

On the bright side - turns out I didn't need gel to cure my mumblemouth!

Now I've just got to headbutt things to death while I wait for my Regeneration to kick in. Or perhaps stumble across another Ubernostrum. A guy can dream.

I have seen madpoles a few times, but only when I'm doing too well to throw it all away testing their strength. Fortunately they're always murdering some hapless NPC creature to alert me to their presence.

Madpoles were the thing that cinched my "ranged weapons are the best" opinion. You can make short work of an entire screen of madpoles with a pair of basic pistols so long as you don't let them touch you. And they're one of the best sources of experience for high level characters.

I was in the same boat you were, man. I have an axe in one hand and a taser in the other and I was just running around tasering and axing. Madpoles put the fear of dismemberment in me. I lost my first arm, was confused, then lost a foot. Then I grabbed my arm and foot and teleported back to Jappo. I think I later cooked and ate them both.

Sometimes I will chop down the trees at the waters' edge so that I can get a good line of sight from the land into the madpole habitat.

"Taser Axer" sounds like a hell of a class. Axe taserer...?

Me too, for the first time today, it cut off my hooks for feet and is in a blood frenzy. I managed to get away, does anyone know if they can walk on land o.o? Also have regeneration, how long do I wait for it to kick in? My movespeed doesn't seem to be hindered by my lack of feet more than by my hooks for feet. Was on the way to Kyakyuka for the first time after Golgotha to cure all my diseases.

And now I got a creepy message about being watched. Have never gotten this far before and expect to die a horrible death any second now...

It works for a long time. My character is primarily an esper, but I put points in dual wielding. The axe cleaves armor and if you put some points in cudgel you combo a good mix of daze, stun, and armor cleaving. Unfortunately eventually enemy AV just gets way too high and you should switch them out for vibro weapons. Also, Zircon, not sure if you've been to the desert city up north, but it doesn't necessarily have to be kyakyuka. A lot of the time, any city with a bookseller has a copy.
Madpoles are the reason even my melee builds keep a least a laser rifle on them.

just tried to cure my fungal infection via madpole - figured i had regeneration and like a billion toughness so it was a better bet than going through all the trouble of finding the ingredients for the cure. i died in three turns

I met them for the first time a few days ago. I lost both arms before my mechanical wings kicked in. Luckily I had just gotten a quest to visit the regeneration chamber at a nearby goat village. Unluckily said village was full of goats and I had no arms.

Fortunately I could fly, manufacture desert rifles, and put together turrets using only my teeth.

Unfortunately, after I locked myself in the regeneration chamber and completed the quest, I noticed it had to be filled with 128 convalessence, and I didn't have any :(.

After flying around the desert for nearly two hours without arms, and scrounging up only a meager 9 convalessence I eventually returned to grit gate and had Q Girl put me down.
