What does Sturdy do to an item?

I've never had an item break, unless it's an artifact being examined, so it doesn't seem super helpful. I initially thought that it meant that the armor couldn't be cleaved, but that's not the case. Any ideas as to the benefit?

Cleave-protection would actually be a pretty cool use for it.

I think my equipment became destroyed, after i mess sometime with acid, or it's often destroy when you ally die in acid or blownup in lava, well i think it's most good for your ally for good equipment, if he die on a tile with dangerous liquid, or pereodic item-destroyin effect(most notably Golgotha)
