For weapons: The arrow is penetration, The heart is damage. If an attack hits at all the penetration value of the weapon is compared to your target's AV via some dice rolls. The higher it is compared to the target's AV the more likely you are to do multiples of the damage listed. When the penetration equals the target's AV, you're typically going to do 1x the damage listed, the higher penetration is above your target's AV, the more likely you are to do several multiples per hit.

For armor: The diamond is AV, what's compared to penetration (the weapon's arrow). The circle is dodge value, which makes you more likely to not be hit by the attack roll at all.

P.S. If that's not sufficently clear let me know, I'd be happy to try another stab at explination. It's a common question, so it's worth spending some time crafting a clear explination.

Every two points of penetration or armor value shifts the damage multiplier by one. (The exact mechanics are slightly more complicated, as I understand it, but that's the upshot.)

The "base" multiplier when PV equals AV is roughly x3 (sometimes x2.) So if you beat your target's AV by 2, you'll do roughly x4 (sometimes x3) damage.

so this would mean a higher number for the DV is always better? just making sure its not like a golf score or something, where a lower score is better, lol

Yes, higher is better. This isn't 2e D&D, haha.

Could you make an Image with the explanation of all symbols of weapons and armor please?
