Best current newbie friendly character start/setup?
Haven't played in a few updates, I remember using longblades but don't really remember what I did.

Any suggestions for a solid setup for a returning player that is effective for feeling out the game again that's been away for a bit?

True Kin Praetorian with at least 18 each in STR/AGI/TO/INT, no points in WI/EGO. I recommend spending on STR and TO. Get the Dueling Stance long blades skill and staggering block for shields. And if you can find shoes that boost your MS, take them (sandals of the river-wives, spring-loaded anything etc.).

You get good starting equipment, though you'll need to get a buckler to use with a torch when going underground. Your stats will let you take and deliver a beating. You don't need to micromanage a lot of equipment.

In the long run you will be weaker than a micromanaged Esper or even a physical mutant, but the early game shouldn't murder you all too gruesomely.
If you're familiar with the basic mechanics of the game already, I'd recommend looking to the esper build guide on steam. You end up basically being invincible by level ~25.

Been playing around with a mutliple arms, horns, quills, two hearted (amphibious defect) setup. 18 all stats with 14 ego. Class is really up to you but multiple arms is more biased towards a melee type, so keep that in mind. Horns and quills do a lot of heavy lifting in the early game so it should be a breeze.

Tried this a few times and keep getting wrecked a bit, guess I gotta feel out different builds and ways to go.

Sometimes getting caught in the first "dungeon" Get to about level 5ish, get both skills, I'll shield bash the harder enemies and such. (remember in the past I played short blades or something but maybe that got changed or nerfed)

Coming back and re-learning the ins and outs obviously doesn't help either, just gotta figure out what is a solid base start to learn again as haha. :P

I'd recommend a strength / toughness / dexterity mutant with Freezing Hands instead.

A teleportation + force wall + light manipulation Esper is also very strong. Just have 24 Ego, at least 18 Willpower, and at least 18 toughness.

I don't know why people keep saying True Kin are good for beginners. They're not. A good mutation is worth more than any of the True Kin starting equipment and only gets better as you invest more in it.

Literally all you need to know to play a mutant with flaming / freezing hands or light manipulation is to open your abilities menu and assign a key to your main offensive mutation (I suggest 'Z'.) Then you hit it when you want to kill something at range. It's literally easier to use than a gun, because you don't have to worry about ammo.

Freezing Hands, Flaming Hands, or Light Manipulation are the real newbie-friendly options. They're much easier to play with than any True Kin build.

Going strong as an Esper currently, farthest I've ever gotten. :D

What's the strength to True Kin?

Not worrying about mutations and getting better starting equipment.

I have been having amazing success with a Esper/Prosetylize build. You're a bit weak until you find a good follower, but I have a leader snapjaw that I have been using dominate to level up and get mutations, right now he murders everything. Followers are stupid though. They love to run into a room filled with chaingun turrets and die. You just have to use clairvoyance a lot and not wander into death.

pure espers are the late-game dominators, no question. they're unrivaled.

a tough, strong, shieldy swordy guy with freezing hands is pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ as well, and easier early on.

beyond that id say other physical builds, axes are neat. maybe a ranged build with extra legs.

Still on my Esper run, what would be a strong sword build w/ freezing hands and such?

Because Ego governs prices at merchants too, I think 16+ ego is good for any build to make it more straightforward to play. I'd play a warden with high agi and max str and axes, maybe. Starting INT can be 16 or 17 so that you can use Tinker I down the line (at level 12 or 18) to improve gear.

Starting with 18 Ego also allows you to get Menacing Stare, Berate, Snake Oiler and Intimidate on any character at level 6, all of which are definitely nice to have.

just simple things like having lots of str/dex/tou, maybe a mutation to boost a primary stat, I typically take night vision and possibly mental mirror.
