If I sell an engraved/painted item, can I still share its secret?

If I sell a painted or engraved item that had a secret when I "looked" at it, is the secret exposed to the public as if I had shared the secret during a water ritual?

AFAIK, no. You can still share the secret.

The secrets system is kinda silly. Those secrets are written on every 5th item and yet they are a big enough deal to improve relations with factions? I hope eventually developers will make engraved and painted items extremely rare and put secrets somewhere more appropriate, like books.

I'm new to the game, but what are secrets? I've sold secrets during water rituals, are they just the lore and locations you gather during the game from engraved items, etc? I think a good way to obtain them would be to put them on the walls of dungeons, with better one towards the bottom where harder enemies are located. Or something like that. I haven't been playing long enough to give good commentary on that though.
