R-18 Option

So I was looking through discussions and people said if you had bought the R-18 version you could move the certain files from your R-18 version to the steam folder to completely unlock the full version with steam, but to do this you needed to buy the R-18 version off of whatever site. Would it also work if instead I download the "Trial Version" from said site or has somebody else already tried this?

No, my point is that Valve is perfectly fine with naked boobs on the screen for whatever reason in a 3D game such as Serious Sam 3, or Hatred (according to one of my friends), or a few other titles he told me about that also had boobs. But once anime is involved, the west is all like "CENSOR CENSOR THAT CRAP NAO" or stuff... I mean, there's a harmless bath scene in NekoPara because the two cats got into a bit of a mess with a cake or something. Yet, its censored...

well, you got to think about it this way. did the devs built it with censor, or not?

considering they made an adult version and an all ages version. you'd got to think what would they place in the all-ages version from the start.

and yes, the game was distributed in motherland japan as well with the all ages version. it's not like steam or publishers censored the game, the game was made for all-ages, like the r18+ version was made for R18+ market.

This title is an eroge, has been from the start. Then of course the all-ages version. Kanon was the same way. And that's from a well-known developer, Visual Arts/key. So, personally, I believe it started as an eroge, and with a few cuts and modified CG artwork, turned it into an all-age version because.. well, there's no point in an eroge if it started as all-age in the first place, like Planetarian which is just purely something to read, no sex in it.

Thing is, anime is censored in the US. At least for TV broadcasting. Same deal in Japan; its to drive up DVD/BD sales and other physical media. Same applies here in the states. In Steam's case, its not a whole lot different. I don't know if they have any sort of geo-restrictions in place (they probably do, but I'm not about to test this), but I doubt Valve wants to bother with "anime sex" and basically tells the devs and/or publishers to either censor it or don't bother. Of course, then you have other games like I mentioned which show full boobs without any hinderance.

Basically, there are masters for a source. These masters have the full, uncensored content. Same with anime that have those "kinky" shots or whatever. They are then censored to fit broadcasting standards, and often are censored, to a lesser extent, in their media sometimes. I do know in Japan, boobs are fine in physical media, but the actual intercourse is still censored. If the US companies were still alive to license hentai, they would get the full uncensored masters to use. Encoding anime is fun, learn a lot of things along the way.

In the case of NekoPara, there are the full uncensored masters, but the retail copies only have the breasts uncensored. Even we in the US still have the censored intercourse, but is still relatively intact. Where the all-age is concerned, well.. the intercourse is completely cut, and about the only notable scene is the bath scene which is just a white dot basically... Doesn't convince me as steam though from the water. They could of actually put a little more effort and maybe make the steam thicker or something, but meh, what do I care.

1) you forget that even with a master, if they are going to censor it, it's gonna be censored to suit all ages. what's the point of censoring if it's gonna have problems being sold to all ages? once you work on something, dont do it half assed. if the original was uncensored then you need to censor it, might as well make it complete.

it's not that i dont understand the frustrations, but making sure that it wont cause international problems is a first order. why international?

2) this was developed and released by NEKOWORKS, (publisher only helped with translation, they dont even sell it by publisher), and the censoring holds true to japanese censor act. it was not 'published' and touched by the publisher one bit, and they only helped in translations. i'm pretty sure they didnt even touch the programming at all, making the complete product built from japan. hence it follows japan's censor law. (it was released here the same time in japan's comiket 87)
blame the developer not releasing it from outside japan XD

besides, even if your country supports showing tits, some dont. since it's an international release, might as well keep your ass clean.

and another person who thinks VNs are just for porn. please, some of the best titles didnt come from a porn VN, but from simple VNs that were based fron short novels.

VNs arent really just for porn, it's a means to make a short novel more interactive and more captivating, by adding visuals, music and voices... while keeping it cheaper than making an anime.

You do realize that the steam game eden* was originally an all ages version game, and the devs just released a fandisk patch to add non-canon adult content.

Edit: Only their 1st 2 titles, Kanon and Air, came out first as an 18+ title.

NEKOWORKS makes adult manga on comiket. i guess it's a given that the VN would have adult content. but since from the start they announced that they'd make an all-ages version, then it's ground up build.
But as a programmer, i'd build an all ages version first, then separate and add the adult content. The CG goes other way around for order, but the all ages version gets finished first, then adult version.
By coding standards, its easier to "Add" things than to "remove" things in code.

You're missing my point. The original content was made first, with sex and all. That is what masters are for. It is then later censored, due to laws, for genitals for the 18+ version, and of course, further censored if a company is going to sell an all-age version. That's how it usually is, even with anime.

Looking on VNDB, I can't deny that. I haven't kept up with VN's as much as I used to, so times may have changed. However, even though a company releases an all-age version first doesn't discount the fact that they could have already drawn (or animated depending on the company and what engine) and colored the nude scenes to later release. Which goes back to the master bit. Exactly how the companies do it, I don't know; it depends if I really feel like contacting them myself, and whether or not they reply is another matter entirely.

you cant validate if that is true or not. as said, not everything is built from start with porn. especially ones with all ages version released ahead or at the same time.

that's actually true. Adult scenes are CREATED first, then edited later.
but again, as i said. if you're going to censor because it needs censoring, you'd do it completely than risk lawsuit. why? because you already have an adult version, why limit the censoring of the all ages version?
