Why did the game give me the Chinese achievement for starting it with Japanese UI and subtitles? What's even worse is that I can't unlock the JP achievement even though I quite clearly play the game in Japanese.

It's a bug that's existed for a long time. Not sure why they've never fixed it. Just try the other languages. (Note that the achievements are awarded when there is story text visible.)

Nah, unfortunately changing languages and restarting the game doesn't work either. I've also tried to switch between languages via the hotkeys E and J but the Chinese achievement is all I've got.

I can't 100% this VN exactly because of this bug. I did first Chinese, then Japanese popped up alright, but the English achievement doesn't pop up no matter the combination of hotkeys, restarts, settings, or whether I change these settings from the Language dropdown in-game or not. Reinstalled in another computer, same behaviour.

I think you should change the name of the discussion to add that it's an unsolved bug, otherwise the devs might think it's just a random discussion. I'm gonna report this to them through the bug report link they pinned in here and I think you should as well since the same thing has happened to you.

Given this is a very old and basic bug, it should've been fixed by now.
