Ran out of tools - What can I do?
I'm working through the campaign and I'm trying to help Guy Forcas prepare for the crusades.

But Lord Richard has suddenly decided that he can't spare me anymore tools, and I don't have any left to build a tool maker. I've searched the entire map but can't find any anywhere.

Is there any solution or am I going to have to start angain from scratch?

You should be able to buy them directly from Northburgh, move your ship over to his island to buy some. If you don't have a ship yet, try setting a buy order in your warehouse.

That's the problem. Perhaps I didn't explain very well, I'm quite a way into the game and I have started building the crusader port on Port Sancril island. So I have ships and an iron mine and smelter works, and I've been trading with Lord Northburgh for tools, and through passive trading.

But all of a sudden he refused to sell me anymore tools, just after I'd used the last in my warehouse to upgrade my housing. So, I found I was stuck with no tools and no way of building a toolmakers because apparently it needs 5 x tools. So I was in a bit of a catch 22 situation.

I've since discovered that had I delivered the iron ore to Guy Forcas earlier I would have been given a quest to build a toolmakers workshop. But I did actually complete that quest until after I had run out of tools.

Anyway, I couldn't see any solution to the problem so I had to reload and start again.

Just visit Brother Hilarius (or however he's called in english) and there you should be able to buy tools.

I don't think he was even on the map. He turned up later in The Lost Children, but this was the mission where you have to build the harbour.

You can have a passive trading at your warehouse to buy tools... you just have to wait for a NPC ship to come to you.

Yeah! pretty standard arrangement in my game, but they just weren't delivering in this one.

I get the impression that I was being deliberately denied tools, ebcause I was supposed to be producing my own as part of the scripted tutorial aspect of the campaign. It's just that the quest to force me to do it didn't trigger until I'd already used all my tools, and Anno seems to be one of those rare games where resource building requires ownership of the very resource that you are trying to produce.

In settlers for example the designers were very careful not to do this. So, of you were building a loggers hut or whatever you didn't need logs to build it.

Very true

Depending on what difficulty you have it on, you can always just destroy a couple buildings to get the tools in the refund.
A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Thanks Duckman, after destroying some buildings I could build the toolmaker.
