Game is launching, but I can't start a game or load saved game.

The game starts without any problems. But when I try to load my savegame from yesterday it says download failed. It is the same messages I get if I try to start an continous game or any of the multiplayer options.

I have played the single player games until now without any problems. But now I wont accept anything.

Does any one know what to do?

I have the same issue when trying to join multiplayer and so does my friend. Seems like this is an issue at Ubisofts end?

same problem, was running fine earlier today. now game starts but wont load saves or start new games, gives download failed message when i try. same happens when i try to go into multiplayer screen. I tried running exe file as administrator as someone mentioned somewhere on this topic. but no use.

Ive started playing again yesteerday, got the same issue. And then with a new online profile.

if you make a non-online profile, is this still gona be an issue?

It's only an issue with online profiles. As a potential workaround for those that want to play with friends; we managed to play together over LAN using offline profiles. We were still able to load the savegame that we previously used to play online.

I haven't tested it yet but I'm sure you can use Hamachi to set up a LAN, then use/create an offline profile and make a LAN session.

If you can't see eachothers sessions...
1. make sure your firewalls are turned off.
2. try to start anno with your LAN adapter disabled and Hamachi adapter enabled. Once you are in the LAN lobby plug in your LAN adapter again and refresh the sessions.

I can confirm this issue, it seems there is something wrong on Ubi side with online profiles for Anno 1404 and Anno 1404 Venice. the game itself runs fine, just the online part that doesnt work now.I do run the unoffcial patch by the way, might be related (need verification from other players)

Hamachi didn't work but Tunngle works just fine and is a great alternative to play online until this gets fixed.

Just made an offline profile and I can load my old games now. Thanks for the tip. But anoying that we can't use our online profiles :(

you need to write a ticket with good critism. They are going to send this, to the producer!! :D
We all have the right for a effective Multiplayer/Online-Account.

I am struggling to fix this - I haven't an online profile but it's not loading saved games.

Old topic but I had the same problem now playing offline. Anno was starting but I could not start new games as well as load savegames. It was stuck in the overlay and just the loading icon was spinning.

I might have found a fix for this.

1. I reinstalled the game (not sure if neccesary)
2. I saved my savegames somewhere else and deleted the folder C:\Users\user\Documents\ANNO 1404 Venice (also not sure if neccesary)
3. I deleted this folder C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Ubisoft (usually the AppData folder is hidden so you have to unhide it first, check google for this)

KEEP IN MIND: You will lose your Anno ingame profiles and all the settings you have made ingame.

I think step 3 is the most important maybe someone can confrim this?
There might be stuff from other games in the Ubisoft folder so maybe you just have to delete the Anno subfolders.

Afterwards I was able to start new games and also load savegames after putting the back into the original folder.

Anno 1404 Gold Edition Fix Win10
Tested on Windows 10 64-bit

Enable DirectPlay in Windows 10:

To enable DirectPlay, first press the Win key + R keyboard shortcut to open Run.
Then enter ‘Control Panel’ in Run, and click the OK button.
Click Programs and Features to open the uninstaller utility
Go to Legacy Components and turn on DirectPlay


Go to you're SteamLibrary \steamapps\common\Anno 1404 folder
find "DXSETUP.exe" in the DirectX folder, install the DirectX file.


Go to Anno 1404 folder again and find the files "Anno4" and "Addon"


In both files, right mousebutton. Properties, Compatible, compatible modus set to windows 7 and turn on Administrator licence.

Copy both files as shortcuts onto youre desktop and rename each shortcut to the original desktop shortcut names.
Delete default installed shortcuts and you are done..
