Game "crashes" after a while
Hello everyone.
I've been thinking about coming back to Anno 1404 for a while. Today I finally did.

Problem is that after using several solutions I found online (mostly on steam forums actually), the game randomly "crashes" after a while.
These "crashes" are always after an action of my own, like clicking a button. The cursor goes into the loading shape, and then nothing happens and I need to terminate the game.

I have the "unofficial patch" installed. Could this be the reason for the problem?

The game is running in windows xp SP3 compatibility mode

Hey, can you explain your situation further - to prevent offering solutions you allready tested?
When is your game crashing? Do you have a recently loaded game / started game or is the game going on with 50.000+ civ?
Most of the time there's an issue with the RAM used by this game as it is 32bit only.

I have used the "4gb ram" patch solution, so that shouldn't be the problem. It is a freshly started game (the first scenario in venice addon). I removed the "unofficial patch" and since then I played about 1 hour and only had one crash (when I selected a building to build)

Are you playing on highest graphics? This could highly reduce your "crash-free" playtime
Have you checked your "engine.ini"?
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Ubisoft\Anno1404\Config
if you play Anno1404 Venice it has its own engine.ini

Set these values as described (if not allready active):

<EnableTextureMemoryManagement>0</EnableTextureMemoryManagement>
<EnableModelMemoryManagement>0</EnableModelMemoryManagement>
<PreloadAll>0</PreloadAll>

If you have done this and lower your graphic quality, you can play longer than one hour nonstop.

I still recommend to save every 2 hours - exit the game to title screen - restart the game.

Never ever use the unofficial patch for Anno 1404 Venice it make every problem the game has under 64bit system worse. So it was good you removed it. ;)

Crashes from selecting or placing buildings are normal, so i have auto save set to 15 minutes.

Oh and i can really recommand not to play on the highest graphic settings aswell. The game has a issues with it since it was released.

only real solution that worked for me was simply setting DirectX version to 9 :

Edit the Engine.ini file with note pad, find the line
<directXversion>0</directXversion>

and replacewith 0 with 9
<DirectXVersion>9</DirectXVersion>

Hi all :) Great to see you all sharing solutions to troubleshoot this issue! It can be difficult to get an older game running, so we appreciate folks showing their continued interest.

My two cents of suggestion is to troubleshoot further with the help of some system files - a https://ubi.li/dxdiag and an https://ubi.li/msinfo. The two articles I've linked there will show you how to find each of them.

Once you have those files, you can reach out to us via our support website[support.ubisoft.com], or via Facebook or Twitter, to send them across, and we'll be able to use them to investigate the issue. I can't guarantee we'll always be able to find a solution for these older games, but we'll give it out best go.

The MsInfo file in particular logs all the errors Windows sees - including which specific file caused the issue. So, in the System Information program you generated it with, you'll find the errors in Software Environment -> Windows Error Reporting. It can be a little difficult to read, though, so do reach out to us if unsure.

Thank you all for the help you've provided. However, I have long moved on from anno... 1404. Anno 1800 is where it's at these days :D

Fair enough :steamhappy: Hope you're having a good time with it!
