Cossacks 2 is more of a tactical game with shallower base building. Things like positioning your troops and morale are much more important. There is more weight on realism, eg correct uniform for different nations.
Cossacks 1/3 has more arcady combat and focuses on the base building and ressource management more, which is much more complex in Cossacks 1/3.
I own both and play both because none is ersatz for the other. You should beware though about the Steam version or retail version of Cossacks 2, it seams to not run on modern PCs.

GOG has sale now and Cossacks 2 Anthology costs only 1.79$ so its definitely worth getting. Plays very different from classic cossacks and I think generally more interesting in gameplay mechanics. Launched both Napoleonic Wars and Battle for Europe on win10 x64 and no problems so far, only BfE had fps drop when placing barracks but it was cured by deleting everything in log.txt and setting it to read-only. But beware if you have a laptop, game doesnt properly recognize videocards and runs with 7 fps on any settings. Dont know maybe GOG anthology is fixed now.
In Cossacks 2 troops are also making use of marching in columns on the roads.
I wouldnt call the basebuilding shallower in cossacks, its just that the game focusing
more on tactical combat and that troops can get very high experince and actually be true veterans in the games that you need to look out for.

In Cossacks 1/3 the upgrads for units is very arcady in the way a sword/pike can upgrade so many times, also formations doesn´t give any value in this game.

I suggest you buy both Cossacks 3 and Cossacks2 since they are aiming at different playerbases. Personally I prefer Cossacks2 since its about tactics in battle and not about upgrading tactics like in Cossacks 1/3

That´s a false statement even if not intended (DRM free sure but doesnt work for many)

You need to have Direct Play installed.

Anyway, I bought the game, and I do have performance issues similar to the Steam version.

I just wished It was true for all and I quite much envy you. I got 2 retail versions of Cossacks 2 but I dont got any computer with winXP ..I´m actually thinking of reinstalling win xp on one of my old laptops. I was so happy when you wrote it.. perhaps it will be fixed soon and that GOG are reading the comment section.

You can install Windows XP on a USB drive, and just use one of your Hard Drives to load the game. Best way to play old games.
You mean to boot from a USB device ?

C2 I think is a very good game. much more tatical, somewhat slower paced. but very fun none the less. should you decide to try it, you can download maps from cossacksworld fan site.
