I'd probably have gone $10 USD myself for the same reason.
Missed opportunity for the holiday sale. If the dev can't be bothered to seize an opportunity like that for some quick sales, it tells me he has either:
A) completely lost interest in the game
B) there are serious problems preventing the games development from moving forward
C) Something really bad has happened in the devs personal life
I'll wait and see if there is ever another patch/update before I even consider a purchase - at any price.
Actually the answer is
D.) The game is complete and has been for months.
I answer customer service enquiries and help with any issues as needed. At some point I may do a minor extra content update but that would be a minor free add on to the already completed game.
As for the sales thing, I am happy enough with the audience and how much people enjoy Cults & Daggers I have not felt it was appropriate to do a sale.
Hope that helps and thanks for checking out the game!
That said, it's a very different game from many others on the market, and I don't regret purchasing it at all. A good deal of fun.
People look on Steam and they see Mixed Reviews, no one is going to want to buy that. But it sounds like you don't care. You're 'happy enough' with the number of people that enjoy the game? So the people that aren't enjoying it at present are just left in the cold I guess.
I'm glad you're happy. I'm not.
^^^^
I know this post is very old but it's important to address this attitude. First, there is nothing wrong with MIXED reviews. Most of the indie strategy games are MIXED and for good reason. Most are trying to expand the genre and require a lot from the user which isn't a popular strategy right now. Most gamers have too many games and not enough time. This means they aren't going to spend 30+ minutes learning a new UI or new game mechanics. It's actually common for people to buy games without reading much of the store page. They then compare the game to their own expectations that often don't have a basis on advertised features. This will result in fewer original ideas and more regurgutated FPS survival games and MOBAS because developers are punished for pushing the industry in new places.
Second, if he is happy with the game, then it's done. The purpose of game development in the indie scene is to make the game you designed. It's not about pleasing everyone. When developers do that they produce a meteocre pile of garbage with features that don't belong together. Be happy he holds to a creative vision and isn't chasing every dollar. Enough developers are doing that. Too many are making games without a concrete design document and are looking to random forum users to come up with the design decisions as they go. Who wants that? Who wants to play a game with the decisions made by a random sampling of people with nothing better to do with their time and lives? No thanks. I'll take a flawed but original game anyday.
30USD for this is overpriced. You could get 6 to 15 customers at 10 or 15 dollars vs....... vs 0 customers and rampant complaints. 0 dollars? or 10 to 120 dollars with a minor price change.
Count how many posts are praising the game, and count how many are begging to buy it for a little cheaper.
ITS ECONOMICS 101 you have people begging you to let them buy!
Let me say it again another way:
You are telling the people who want to buy:
"Screw you"
He last responded in December so he's definitely still around. And I get his argument that he wants to be fair to the people who bought it back in the day at full price - but the truth is the game is a couple of years old now. That alone should either lead to a lower price or at least a couple of chances to get it at a discount during the big sales. This fact, the unwillingness to put it on sale, and be it only 20% or 30%, is what's putting me off. I'm willing to put down around €15-20, an amount you can get GTA V or Witcher 3 GOTY these days, but there has to be some kind of movement from the other side, too...
