So where does the word "pikii" come from?
Googling seems to indicate it's the name of a Japanese game publisher, but that doesn't really make sense in context here.

Japanese onomatopoeia "piki piki" is the sound of cracking, which makes some sense with ice breaking. See also another ice/penguin themed puzzle game, Pikiinya.
It is Japanese. It's an onomatopoeia, "ピキィ" (literally "PIKII") refers to a sound that something solidifying. This aligns with the matrix 'freezing over' and any line completed staying there while the gimmick is in effect.

Oh interesting, I couldn't find it in the dictionaries I was checking, just "piki." But that definitely makes sense for ice solidifying.
