There is many changes in the animatronics from FNaF1 to FNaF2.
That, coupled with the deathscreen, implies they shove you into a suit.
That said, the most likely reason is that they - or at least the old animatronics, and by extension the ones from 1 - are haunted by the ghosts of children killed by a guard, and believe every guard is that same person thanks to malfunctions and/or screwups in their facial recognition, which may or may not have been caused, again, by the haunting. Or alternatively the Marionette, seeing as it caused and/or committed parts, if not all, of the murders; it is depicted as shoving the children into the suits, after all.
But that said, the reason why they're after the nightguards is: they're getting back at their murderer. They just don't know he's already dead, or are afraid they're just killing innocents and he's still out there - and as such, continue to make sure. Every time, they think it's him. Then they think again every time the dead guard is replaced. And again. And again. And again. And..
Hell, the animatronics might be doing it of their own accord; it might not be a haunting that caused it, but them going berserk on their own.
That whole "guard was murderer" thing is implied by the Purple Man being depicted as a man wearing a badge in one of his rarer appearances...
...and, more importantly, holding a phone.
The whole "animatronics went berserk" thing is implied by a voice in the deathscreen minigames - seemingly Freddy or one of the others - spelling out "SAVETHEM" in The Chase, "SAVEHIM" in Give Cake, and "HELPTHEM" in Give Life.
They couldn't save the children, so they're going for the next best thing.
And now, they're too afraid that he's still out there to stop.
And if the children are doing it... then they're just as afraid.
Either way, by the time Mike takes the job, there is nothing left to fix. This is how it has been, is, and always will be.
You can't mend a broken mind.
(note that the idea that they know they're ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up every single time and can't help it and they may have gone insane by 1993/whenever the hell Mike takes the job is purely my headcanon; that said, it makes enough sense)
In the second game he breifly says "and trying to stuff you in a suuuiiit , so hey, we gave you a FREDDY FAZBEAR head."
