It seems putting the mask on in a timeframe of around ten frames after you put the tablet down and instantly taking it off causes him to vanish. Going back to the cameras also seems to make him go away if he's in the hall.
It doesn't seem to matter how long I wait, be it immediately or after ~5 seconds.
Edit:
Okay, attempt 1, Old Bonnie in room. I put on hood as soon as he leaves and I die. Attempt 2, Old Bonnie in room, once he's gone I flashlight the hallway and check both vents before winding the box, and die after a few seconds in the camera mode (just a hair over long enough to fully wind the box from about 33%), dying as I was moving the mouse to drop the camers.
What am I missing that stops their appearence from being a glorified ad for the upcoming "game over" screen?
Also, on attempt 2, I was winding the music box and got kicked out of camera mode when Old Bonnie entered the room, so didn't move at all once he appeared.
Attempt 3, Bonnie shows up, and I put the hood on as soon as the screen goes to black and the creey sound effect stops. Can't remember if that's the same as attempt 1 or if I waited until the lights were fully back on before putting the hood on.
old Bonnie, old Chica and both Freddys (not Goldie) require you to put on the mask as fast as humanly possible. When you're further in the game, you will need an unreal reaction time to evade them. Goldie just hates the flashlight, so once you flash it at him ur ded. Being forced out of the screen usually doesn't mean game over and you're still able to satisfy the animatronics.
As someone who already beat the story + a bunch of custom nights, I can assure you that the animatronics that stand in the room (except Goldie) need you to react incredibly fast to put on the mask.
As soon as you see them.
Also, either the reaction time necessary is too rediculously fast, or I have a seriously slow reaction time (and even if I am slow, it's still less than a second) (also, only on night 3).
At the start of the night, I load the camera and set it to the prize table to wind the music box.
After winding the music box (maybe only halfway if it's really low because of heavy activity in the office), I'll drop camera and immediately put the hood on. If an old model is in the room, this quick double-tap pretty much ensures if my reaction time needs to be faster, then the speed requirement is beyond unreasonable. Only potential downside is if Golden Freddy is in the room. I haven't seen him yet, but if he's as rare as some people make him out to be, I should only have to worry about him once every couple-dozen games.
If an old animatronic is in the room, wait for it to pass, otherwise mask comes right off again. Sequenxe is then shine the light down the hallway. If Foxy is present, then tap Ctrl 5 or 6 times to "stun" him (I guess is the thrown around term).
Once this is done, or if the flashlight won't light the hallway, check the right vent first, then the left vent. If the flashlight didn't light the first time (or do it anyways because repetition breeds habit), bring up the moniter and wind the box up again, and repeat the process all over again.
This last bit only changes if I see a toy model in either vent (or hear the Mangle) in which case the hood comes down until I hear movement in the vent (or no longer hear the Mangle), in which case I check the hall and vents again (in the above order) to ensure safetly before winding the toy box (likely only halfway at first because this is a lot of time to have passed).
The reason to check the right vent first is so the guard is looking to the left when the moniter goes up. This is important because A: the button to wind the box is on the left side of the screen (nearly center, but still more than left enough), and the down mouse-movement toggle for the hood is also on the left side of the screen, so if an old model is in the room when the screen goes down, this ensures my head won't move when the hood goes up, thus, I'll maintain the requisite motionlessness.
Once I added the double-tap screen drop to hood on motion I went from night 3 to night 5 with no trouble whatsoever. Only reason I died on my first attempt of night 5 is because it's pretty cheap for the game to immediately drop the camera screen right as I'm raising it to wind the music box. Sorry, but I don't have The Flash's speed or reaction time.
