Other games like Mystik Belle
Hi guys.
Dev here. I am a massive fan of the arcade adventure games of old - Dizzy, Slightly Magic, Seymour, and Puff in Dragonland are classics of the golden age of home micros, and are among my all-time favorites. In recent years this gameplay style has fallen out of favor. I made Mystik Belle to try and fill this genre void. I made the game I wanted to play, but nobody else was making.
I'm certain there are others like me, who love this type of games and would love to play the ones they missed.

So, here is my plea: If you know of any other arcade adventure game new or old and not listed below, please post them here. Hell, if you are a developer who made an arcade adventure game, here's a topic where you can self-promote, for whatever that's worth: )

List so far -

Modern-ish games:

Classic games:
  • Dizzy (series)
  • Seymour (series)
  • Wally (series)
  • Spellbound (series)
  • Oli & Lisa 3
  • Scepter of Bagdad
  • Slightly Magic
  • Puff in Dragonland
  • Terramex/Cosmic Relief: Prof. Renegade to the Rescue

PS: I know DizzyAge is a thing, but most of those games should be covered under the "Dizzy (series)" entry. Were there non-dizzy games made in Dizzy Age? If so, let me know!
PPS: Maybe I should include a "best DizzyAge games" list here?

Perhaps Akuji the Demon and Hydra Castle Labyrinth (both freeware)?

Thank you for your suggestion, but from the videos I was able to find of these games it seems that both of them are straight-up metroidvanias without the point-and-click component. They both look good though, and I'll def check them out.

Found a couple of other modern-ish Arcade Adventures to add to the list, though none of them are particularly high profile.

A higher profile sequel to Chiffa was announced but never finished. The original Chiffa even made it through Steam Greenlight back in the day, but the store page for it seems to have been given to a different game.

- Blinky's Scary School (Amiga, ZX Spectrum)

I also played some j2me games with this genre. I'll update later...

Hey! Some very good suggestions here! Thank you!
  • Definitely adding Towdie - a wonderful unofficial Gummy Bears game made by Polish devs.I have actually completed it at one point! There are translated versions of it too.
  • Kliatba Noci looks close to something like Scepter of Bagdad. I could only locate a Polish version of it so far. Adding to the "classic" list.
  • Not sure about the Blinky games. I could never figure them out. The manuals are literally a joke, there is zero information online about them, and "longplays" are no help, as actions in them seem completely arbitrary. Still, I guess they are arcade adventures of some sort.
  • I only knew of one Giddy game, and that one didn't strike me as an arcade adventure. I guess I'll need to give it another look.
  • Simon the Sorcerer are great games, but as far as I know, they are straight up point-and-clicks.
  • Puggsy? I loved Puggsy on both, Amiga, Sega/Mega CD and Genesis/Megadrive. Always thought of them more as puzzle-platformers, and never thought to include them in the Arcade Adventure club... But you might be right!
  • I love Fran Bow, but it seems to me it's more of a traditional point-and-click with pure (optional) arcade sections intercut throughout. I guess it technically qualifies as "arcade adventure" then? But I'll be a jerk here and say it doesn't: )
  • Dropsy looks super cool, and I think I owned it since day one, but never got the nerve to give it a go. The clown is just so freaking unsettling! Also, isn't it also kind of a straight-up point-and-click?
  • Bought Anahita. Looks more like Another World-type of game to me, but I'll def give it a go, like tonight!

Just want to chime in to say that Fran Bow and Dropsy are both also available DRM-free on GOG, Humble Store, and itch.io, and Fran Bow is also available DRM-free (I think?) on GameJolt.

Just like how Mystik Belle is available DRM-free on GameJolt and itch.io.

Some j2me games with this genre. You can play j2me games on your Android phone with J2ME Loader emulator:-

1) Soul Catcher
https://youtu.be/VHcWrhiq3k4

2) Cat Love Adventure
https://youtu.be/MNBnDxJAC3Q
* This game has 2 sequel (Cat Coral Beach & Cat in Pingutopia), but the gameplay more like a point-and-click adventure game.

3) Little Longnose (Ка́рлик Нос)

* Only available in Russian. Unable to finished this game because i not understand Russian language.

4) Amy's Adventure
- https://phoneky.com/games/?id=j4j60088

* More like a point-and-click adventure game...

---------------

Additional information:

1) Unsuccessful Towdie Kickstarter - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/854692788/towdie/description?lang=de

2) Beavis and Butt-Head (Megadrive) also have inventory puzzle element...

Very cool!
  • Oh, wow, Soul Catcher looks like a prime candidate for the treatment I gave Wizzley Presto[gamejolt.com], re-coding it to PC. The game contains very few assets, and I could absolutely use Belle engine to re-create it.I'd rather look for the original creators of the game before attempting it though.

On second thought, there is zero "arcade" action here. Also, not a super good game, apparently. Damn, I was so excited there for a second!
  • Cat Love Adventure games look cool, though very simple. A bit underwhelming, but def something I'll try getting into.
  • Little Longnose might be another game to look into localizing and remaking for PC, though the few minutes I played it, I didn't love. Way too much dialogue.
  • Amy's Adventure looks more like a more standard point-and-click, but it's possible I just didn't get to the arcade elements in the short time I played it.
  • A Towdie remake would've been cool, though not sure how okay Disney would've been with it. That kickstarter was a bit low-effort though, with only one updated screenshot they kept showing over and over again. I wish they had more done before rolling it out.
  • Not sure about the Beavis and Butthead game... It does sort of qualify as an arcade adventure... but ugghh: )

Downloaded and played a bit of Anahita. It's definitely and arcade adventure, but not a very good game.

This is my favorite genre. If you find another game with this genre, i hope you can add it to the list...

* The developer for Soul Catcher still exists.

* I played Anahita for Android yesterday. Very hard because there are no clue, and very buggy. Maybe i will record the gameplay for walkthrough later.

Also, i already played Wizzley Presto port for PC that you make, loved it. Play-test this game long time ago (you give me the download link via Twitter message).

Some other ZX Spectrum games with this genre.

1) Murray Mouse Supercop
https://youtu.be/k07CWM6Rt8c

2) Thunderbirds

I tried to stay away from obscure Russian Dizzy-likes for the ZX Spectrum, as many of them are super janky. Among them there are exceptions, but not many.

I remember Thunderbirds. It was hard as hell, and I could never figure out what to equip my guys with.

Finished Anahita The Good Girl. It was charming but ultimately not very good. The controls are so unresponsive, they feel near-broken. The puzzles start out arcade-adventury, but in the second half of the game devolve more into switch-flipping and shooting things. Some of those puzzles were completely ridiculous and impossible to figure out through anything but pure trial-and-error.

First off, thanks for the making Mystik Belle. I found it really charming and enjoyable and will definitely play through it again in the future. I'd like to contribute to the thread. I'll split it into games I've played and games I haven't, and split the games I have played into metroidvanias vs more action/adventure-ish. The not-played ones are all in my library which means something caught my enough to get them wishlisted and then sales prices were offered led me to buy them, but I just haven't gotten around to playing yet (I have at least a few years of backlog to go through =D)

Action adventure, have played, would recommend:
The Cave
Crossing Souls
Dex
Final Station
The Fall
Teslagrad (maybe more platform/puzzler)
Limbo
Braid
Apotheon
Ittle Dew
Rocketbirds
Another World/Out of this World
Flashback

More metroidvania-style, have played, would recommend
Chasm
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
Snailiad (was a flash webgame, not sure if playable anymore)
Time Spinner
Nub's Adventure
Outland
Rex Rocket
A Robot Named Fight (rogue-light love-letter to Super Metroid)
Shadow Complex
Axiom Verge
The Messenger

Games in my library under action-adventure/metroidvania tags that I haven't played yet but want to at some point
World to the West (3rd person 3d adventure, sequel to Teslagrad)
Adele: Follow the Signs
Aer
Alchemist's Castle
Awake (looks a lot like Limbo)
Badland
Candle
Cornerstone: The Song of Tyrim
External Visions
Friendly Fire
Game Ellen
Hallow Knight
The Gardens Between
Gloom
The Little Acre
Mable and the Wood
Pinstripe
Psychonauts
Randall
Selma and the Wisp
Sisyphus Reborn
Soul Axiom
The Talos Principle
Typoman
The Way

We need METROIDVANIA

I was hoping for more like a platformer-adventure game. In the 80s and 90s in Europe this type of games was called Arcade Adventure, but the genre has all but vanished today. Typical tropes are:
  • Sidescrolling platformer gameplay.
  • Inventory items.
  • Limited inventory space.
  • Point-and-click-adventure-like puzzle structure.
