Hi, I just bought Anno today and was having very similar issues.
Mine always crashed to the desktop when starting the campaign or any other scenario.

My log entries look like this: (..steamapps\common\Anno 1404\AnnoCrash.log)

The solution for me was to set the date and time format to "Match Windows display language (recommended)"

Go to "Control Panel" --> "Region" --> under the Tab: "Formats".
Set the field called "Format" to "Match Windows display language (recommended)".

I run my Win10 in English (United States) but live in Europe and was using my local time format.
After making this change I can start the campaign for Anno 1404.

I second this! Been looking for a fix for days and gave up. When I saw this topic I decided to reinstall and try again... it works!

Thanks a million!

Found another workaround:
- Create a new local user.
- Log in with that user and set the language and region settings to the settings you need.
- Log out
- Log in with your usual user.
- Run Anno with the “Run As” method. (shift-right click on anno4.exe)
