how to build on a second island
Looked everywhere. Googled, read guides and walkthroughs. Noob question, but how can I settle on a second island? I can't build on it because it doesn't overlap on a construction area. Are there specials units that you park on the new island? Settlers perhaps?

You take a ship (normally your flag ship) and put the materials on there so that you can build something (some tools and some wood). Then you drive a coast of the island you want to build on and when your ship is near you should be able to build a kontor (click on the ship)

I thought this game had some sort of tutorial.
Anyway,i would suggest to start with the story mode (kampaign) since it tells you alot of the basics how to play the game.

The campaign counts as tutorial in this game.

Play the campaign. It is the tutorial and goes through everything step by step as a story.
As tutorials go it is pretty good.

ah, I went straight into sandbox mode :-)

The story and voice acting is a bit cheesy, but you get a good graded intro to the gameplay mechanics....which is important in this game since they are relatively complex.....and there is no manual.

There is a manual, and it is available even if you do not have a disc version of the game. Just right-click the game in your library, and there should be a 'manual' option that will link you to a page on the internet where the full manual is available.

You obviously have not read the 'manual'
It is not a manual.
It is 10 pages of superficial descriptions of the main menu and main game screen icons.
No gameplay info at all.

But there is a good user-made manual at GameFAQS
http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/611178-anno-1404-gold-edition/faqs
And the wiki (user-made) is good too

The Campaign is good for teaching you the basics of the game, but Continuous mode is where this game really shines.
