Where do I find the startup log?
Here's what the startuplog file says:
BrashMonkey Spriter - Version r9
Setting up main window...

Initializing model...
Successful.
Setting up widgets...
Successful.
Setting up graphics viewport with openGL...

Spriter launched successfully.

The program can't start because VCOMP120.DLL is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
What does this mean?
I remember playing a game a relatively long time ago which I believe kinda somehow messed up my Visual Studio installation but I could play and run everything until Spriter so I didn't give it a thought. I'm not even sure if that caused the problem in the first place.
Once I got Spriter, however, it wouldn't open. I tried the non-steam trial and when I tried to launch it, it told me 3 files were missing (MSVCR100.dll and a couple of others with similar names). After googling the files I quickly found out that they were found in Visual Studio stuff.
I tried installing the 2013 version like the Spriter guys said, but it wasn't working. It was saying "Installation successful" but it wasn't installing anything new. I had a look at my list of installed softwares and saw that I had many, many versions of Visual Studio, the latest being 2015 if my memory is correct. I decided to start over and uninstall them all, restarted my computer and installed the 2010 and 2013 version ( I think the 2013 version is enough but I initially found the 2010 version one so I thought what the hell and installed both ).
It now works. :)
Not quite sure how I had that issue in the first place and what caused it exactly, but I know that if you installed a newer version than 2013, if you try to install 2013, it won't install the 2013 version even though your computer tells you it did. If it installs "instantly", it probably means it didn't install anything. You should see a progress bar if it does install correctly.
I can confirm, you can not install 2013 if you have a newer version already installed. It will tell you it did, or tell you you already hav a newer version installed and cancel the install. The only way to get around this is uninstall the newer version, install both the 32 and 64 bit versions of 2013 (if you're on a 64 bit system) and then Spriter should work. After which point, Windows will eventually update you to the latest version of Visual Studio, but without removing the needed DLL files you got from specifically installing 2013.
cheers.
