Can't access story mode
Whenever I click on story mode, the only option that pops up is "exit to windows." I've tried pretty much everything.

Thanks. FYI to embed an individual screenshot, just paste the shared file link and it'll show, i.e. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2078692455:

Anyway.. that's strange.. Never seen that before.

Are you able to use the keyboard to select the invisible options above and below it?

Here's some things you can try anyway; mostly generic but there are a couple of AC2-specific potential solutions. I'd try them in order of listing:
  1. Make sure your drivers are up-to-date.

This genuinely could cause the menu problem, so do make sure they are:

If you're unsure which video card you have, follow these quick instructions (for Windows only):
    1. Click Start menu.

    2. Type "system".

    3. The System Information application should appear in the search results. Click System Information to open it.

If the System Information application does not appear, keep entering the search term for "system information" until it appears in the search results.

If it still doesn't appear after that:
      1. Press the Esc key to cancel the search.

      2. Click the Start menu again.

      3. Browse the Start menu programs list all the way to the "Windows Administrative Tools" (under the letter "W").

      4. Expand the "Windows Administrative Tools" folder, and then click System Information in there.

    4. In the System Information window, expand the Components branch in the navigation pane on the left-hand side (by clicking the "+" (plus/addition) icon).

    5. Click the Display option.

    6. Check the manufacturer and model of your video card(s) in the list that is now displayed (look for the Name and Adapter Description item and value field(s)).

  2. Verify integrity of game cache.

Follow the instructions on this Steam Support article.

  3. Try deleting the configuration file.

Don't worry about deleting this, it's only config information and does not affect any save game data; it will recreate itself when the game is launched again.

PCGamingWiki[www.pcgamingwiki.com] outlines where the configuration file is:
    %APPDATA%\Ubisoft\Assassin's Creed 2\Assassin2.ini
(See here[www.pcgamingwiki.com] on how to access "%APPDATA%".)

  4. Try adjusting settings in the Nvidia Control Panel (if you're running an Nvidia GPU).

This is to solve a separate graphics issue regarding lights shining through walls and objects in AC2, but if nothing else has worked so far, it might be worth a shot to see if it has any effect in the menu.

    See this excerpt from PCGamingWiki[www.pcgamingwiki.com]:
Lights shine through walls and other objects

    Nvidia Control Panel Fix

    • This issue is cause by the Nvidia Control Panel forcing graphical settings on.
    1. Enter Nvidia Control Panel.
    2. Select "Adjust image settings with preview".
    3. Select "Let the 3D application decide".

  5. Uninstall the game, restart your PC, then reinstall it.

Worth trying if none of the above works.

    1. Go to Steam Library.

    2. Right-click Assassin's Creed II.

    3. Click Manage.

    4. Click Uninstall.

    5. Once uninstalled, restart your computer, and then reinstall the game again in Steam.

Thanks for trying to help. I have pretty much tried all of these. I just reinstalled the game after months because I saw something that might work but yet, it still is bugged. Guess I just will have to play on my xbox 360.

Ah, that sucks man.

Have you tried switching between fullscreen and windowed (Alt + Enter). Idk, sometimes that solves problems with games. I doubt it will with this though.

See here[www.pcgamingwiki.com] for more on switching to windowed mode.

The only other thing that comes to mind is running the program compatibility troubleshooter. Again, I doubt anything will come of it, but could see what happens.

See here[support.microsoft.com] on how to run program compatibility troubleshooter in Windows.

I just installed this game tonight and I'm having the exact same issue. Words can't even describe...

Hello, I was running into the same problem, I noticed that my ubisoft connect was offline, after I went online I could acces my save file. I hope this solves this mystery for other people having this problem.

Is there a fix for this? Assassin's creed 2 won't work without Ubisoft connect online, but assassin's creed 4 will ask for a username and password every time you launch it unless Ubisoft connect is offline.

Heya Pringle, thanks for reaching out about this! Sorry to hear you're having trouble with Assasin's Creed 2 - I'd really like to help :)

Can you be specific for me what happens when you try to play AC2 offline? There are a few different reported issues here in this thread, so I'll need more information to know what troubleshooting steps to suggest.

Let me know if I can clarify this question :)

actually i'm having the same problem(on the ubisoft louncher version)... is possible that there isn't still a solution to the problem after all this time?

Hey there _ANSI_

As mentioned by Ubi-Thrupney, there were quite a few issues discussed in this thread.

Could you please be more specific on what exactly is happening for you when you're trying to play, that way we can take a look into steps to suggest you could try out.
Thanks!
