Assassin's Creed II

Assassin's Creed II

Can't get a CD key
Hi,

I recently purchased Assassin's credd II. When I try to launch it, an error message appears which says "Failed to request product key from Steam, please try again in a few minutes.". The game quits immediatly after closing the message's windows.

Does anyone knows how to fix this issue please ?

The issue is actually not with Ubisoft but Valve.
When installing Assassin's Creed 2 (https://steamdb.info/app/33230/) on Windows, it will only install the Windows CD Key DLC (https://steamdb.info/app/33361/), but not the Mac CD Key DLC (https://steamdb.info/app/33362/). It isn't even shown as an available DLC on the Windows Steam client.

In contrast, when installing the game on Linux, both CD Key DLCs are installed as well, but the Steam client can only fetch the Windows Key, but also wants to get the Mac key, as ShowCDKeyOnLaunch is set to true for both DLCs (see SteamDB links).

When launching the game on Windows, the Steam client will thus only try to get the Windows DLC Key, but the Linux client is trying to obtain the Windows and the Mac key on launch, which fails.

There's an appinfo.vdf file in the thread which allows you to locally fix this issue. I was then able to get the key and launch the game (after an initial error from the ubisoft launcher, which disappeared on second try)

If Your game asks you for a key at the entrance, then in order to solve this difficulty, could you try the following steps?

- Log in to the following directory:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\cache

- Move the folder named "ownership" to a safe location (on your hard drive, or on your desktop)
- Delete the "cache" folder completely"

After following these instructions, I would like to ask You to check your game files on Steam for damage or missing files. To do this, please follow the instructions provided below:

- Launch Steam.
- Right - click on the game in the library and select "Properties".
- Open the "Local files" tab and click on the "Check the integrity of game files..." button. Steam will check the integrity of the game files. This process may take several minutes.

If the program asks You to restore the files after checking the files, agree, and then check again until you get a message that no problems were found. Then try running the game again. I also apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Let us know if it helps, and if it doesn't, we will continue to solve the problem.
Hi Black fenix,

Thanks for your quick answer. I forgot to mention that I'm running this game on linux and I don't have any "cache" folder under the "Assassin's Creed 2" one.

I noticed that on other Assassin's Creed games I own (Rogue or Black flag), there's a "Support/Software/GameLauncher/" folder but they only contains a "UplayInstaller.exe" file but no "cache" folder.

Do you have any information regarding the linux versions please ?

PS : Rogue and Black flag work perfectly with the Proton's versions provided by Steam.

try using geforce now to login to your steam and launch the game there it might show the cd key that way they have a free mode for 1hr sessions at less quality but as its just for the key it should work or use any windows pc just for the key

Hi everyone, just a quick update.

For any of our older games on Steam, it may force you to use our older Uplay client with the game.

If you havent been able to update the Uplay Client to the new Ubisoft Connect launcher your older games may not work straight away and may crash.

Please make sure you have updated the Uplay launcher to Ubisoft Connect by launching Uplay whilst Steam is completely shut.

You will know when you have the new updated launcher as the name Uplay in the top right will now be displayed as Ubisoft Connect.

After updating the launcher, if you still have trouble launching the game, please make sure to check Ubisoft Connects .exe file is set to run as administrator in the game properties -

The Uplay .exe file is located here by default -
C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\

- Right click on the files and select 'Properties'
- Select the 'Compatibility' tab
- Check the 'Run as Administrator box'
- Click 'Apply' then 'OK'

Next try launching your game from either Ubisoft Connect by itself, or Steam. Let us know in the thread if you are still unable to launch the game after trying the steps above.

Hi Ubi-Milky,

thanks for your answer. I will try it when I have a bit more time. I'm using Linux, so does your solution works for it ? It seems to be designed for Windows.

Same problem with getting CD Key from steam. When I try to run the game or click "Manage > CD Keys" I get popup with title "Steam - Error" and text "Failed to request product key from Steam. Pleasy try again in a few minutes."
Tried dozen times, so far no luck:steamsad:

I have the same problem on Linux. It's not about running the game, I can't even acces my activation code. I'm just asking if anybody has a solution, because Ubisoft support is ghosting me on every platform for about two days at this moment.

Thanks for the update on this. I'll flag this as the topic solution just in case another user stumbles across this thread. Thanks!
