If Your game asks you for a key at the entrance, then in order to solve this difficulty, could you try the following steps?
- Log in to the following directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\cache
- Move the folder named "ownership" to a safe location (on your hard drive, or on your desktop)
- Delete the "cache" folder completely"
After following these instructions, I would like to ask You to check your game files on Steam for damage or missing files. To do this, please follow the instructions provided below:
- Launch Steam.
- Right - click on the game in the library and select "Properties".
- Open the "Local files" tab and click on the "Check the integrity of game files..." button. Steam will check the integrity of the game files. This process may take several minutes.
If the program asks You to restore the files after checking the files, agree, and then check again until you get a message that no problems were found. Then try running the game again. I also apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Let us know if it helps, and if it doesn't, we will continue to solve the problem.
Thanks for your quick answer. I forgot to mention that I'm running this game on linux and I don't have any "cache" folder under the "Assassin's Creed 2" one.
I noticed that on other Assassin's Creed games I own (Rogue or Black flag), there's a "Support/Software/GameLauncher/" folder but they only contains a "UplayInstaller.exe" file but no "cache" folder.
Do you have any information regarding the linux versions please ?
PS : Rogue and Black flag work perfectly with the Proton's versions provided by Steam.
I tried to get the CD Key the way you describe but it can't work. It work perfectly with Rogue and Black flag.
For any of our older games on Steam, it may force you to use our older Uplay client with the game.
If you havent been able to update the Uplay Client to the new Ubisoft Connect launcher your older games may not work straight away and may crash.
Please make sure you have updated the Uplay launcher to Ubisoft Connect by launching Uplay whilst Steam is completely shut.
You will know when you have the new updated launcher as the name Uplay in the top right will now be displayed as Ubisoft Connect.
After updating the launcher, if you still have trouble launching the game, please make sure to check Ubisoft Connects .exe file is set to run as administrator in the game properties -
The Uplay .exe file is located here by default -
C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher\
- Right click on the files and select 'Properties'
- Select the 'Compatibility' tab
- Check the 'Run as Administrator box'
- Click 'Apply' then 'OK'
Next try launching your game from either Ubisoft Connect by itself, or Steam. Let us know in the thread if you are still unable to launch the game after trying the steps above.

thanks for your answer. I will try it when I have a bit more time. I'm using Linux, so does your solution works for it ? It seems to be designed for Windows.
Tried dozen times, so far no luck
If you're experiencing this error, can you contact us via Twitter DM[ubi.li] or Facebook PM[ubi.li] with a screenshot of the game in your Steam purchase history, and a screenshot of the error.

Hey there,
Our solutions are designed for use on Windows platforms, however if you have already contacted us we will be in touch as soon as possible.
We are experiencing much higher than normal contact volumes resulting in some delays across all of our channels, so rest assured your query isn't going ignored!

The issue is actually not with Ubisoft but Valve.
There's an appinfo.vdf file in the thread which allows you to locally fix this issue. I was then able to get the key and launch the game (after an initial error from the ubisoft launcher, which disappeared on second try)
Thanks for the update on this. I'll flag this as the topic solution just in case another user stumbles across this thread. Thanks!
