Assassin's Creed II

Assassin's Creed II

Game Still Has Worst Controls Out There
To this day, this game has literally the worst controls I've ever seen in my life.
Every one of these Assassins Creed Games have this same problem.

You point in the direction forward, he goes in EVERY OTHER DIRECTION, except forward.

It's worse than I remember.
It's not just the camera angles switching around constantly, it's also just random acts of sabotage as a game mechanic.

If you're thinking that it should be helpful of the game to pick a ledge to grab onto automatically, at least consider the fact that maybe the ledge closest to you and in good range would be the best choice then.
Not the one further away, out of range, or just a slower scrawling up the wall path.

I've just tried to jump when getting chased, after killing the first damn target, between two roofs onto a platform to cross it, and he decided to fly off towards some other direction than where I was directing, and fall all the way to the ground.

It's awful, truly.

Edit: I'm thinking maybe they updated the older games to have the same terrible pathfinding/controls as Assassins Creed 3?
I don't think it was this bad before.

I completely agree. I despise the fact that they made the controls icons instead of the buttons that you have them bound to. I have also run into many situations where I go flying off in the wrong direction due to horrible movement.

All of the early Assassin's Creed games had control issues. Much of the problem is that the game uses lots of context sensitivity and the game sometimes makes the wrong decision which is frustrating for the player since they entered the correct input. Unity is probably where Ubisoft started to get a real handle on the controls. All the games before that have their issues.

Fortunately, none of the games are too hard and it's usually possible to just roll with the control issues.

Nope. I don't think anything has changed. These early games have always had problems. You probably just forgot about it especially if you've been playing the newer games which have much better controls. It can be a bit of a shock going back now.

I actually got so far as the start of Black Flag and then I just couldn't go on with the games anymore.
The game wasn't interesting enough for me to play it at the price of such controls and I just quit.
Coming back to AC2 was a journey I made remembering it was the first and probably only AC game i truly enjoyed. (AC1 was fun but the first and not as good and a bit bland.)

But now I just can't play this game anymore. My controller broke somewhat, I can't seem to rebind anything nor get any other controller to work and keyboard and mouse in these games is uncomfortable. (Although possibly more accurrate game response to the actual controls at times.)

At times they can be real ♥♥♥♥♥ but mostly you are just bad at this game, look up a guide or something, idk

It's incredibly hard to get used to, and kinda frustrating too. I figured out the head/empty hand/weapon hand eventually, but the k+m controls are ridiculous. Who the hell thought making the right mouse button the default button for running? Like ???

I know you can rebind the keys but the menu is so confusing I could never get it working, so I switched to controller. It plays much much better this way, but there are still problems other people mentioned like Ezio randomly flying the other direction or deciding to jump from a building despite you wanting him to climb while pressing the correct button.

But then my controller is broken and one button isn't responding... so I tried to rebind the keys, but turns out that's practically impossible...

But regardless, the jumping in random directions is just too much.
I can't sit through these games anymore.

You need to download a fix for that

It’s always been finicky, but I feel like the games design encourages you to traverse more slower than the game allows and when you do, you get better results. I prefer this style to what unity brought with holding the button in one direction for automatic traversal. It’s too easy

Tried. It's not exactly working.

this was a while ago i don't exactly remember it now, but it was some custom keybindings for a newer xbox controller

Did you actually launch the application file and set them within that? People are saying you just need to download the files but it didn’t work until I set it up

The problem with this game and basically every game before Origins is the left joystick isn't analog, it's treated as digital and you have to use an analog trigger to run. So if you aren't perfectly centered it outputs a 1 for forward and another 1 to left or right which digitally = 45 degree movement. To make matters worse the jump button isn't really a jump, it's sprint with an auto-jump. Common sense says you would pull the trigger to run and when you get to the edge you would hit the jump button to jump or climb but here if you try that you'll either hang off a ledge or run into the wall and go flying backwards in the opposite direction. You have to either engage the jump before pulling the trigger or you have to hit the jump button a full 2 steps before you want to jump. Use the left joystick to both walk and run and then a jump button that actually makes you jump when you hit it like they did in Origins and Odyssey. I can climb and run atop building in Origins and Odyssey and never fall off or miss a jump and it goes in the direction I tell it to go like it should. There really is no need for a trigger to run when you already have an analog joystick to do it. The main reason the camera is so wonky is because you can't control it with the joystick when you constantly have to use your thumb to push buttons to sprint/jump or use a weapon and again with Origins and Odyssey you didn't have those restrictions because now the trigger and bumper are used for weapons which means you can leave your thumb on the right joystick and control the camera while are the same time using a weapon of choice

Witcher 3 used to suffer from some of the same problems playing with a controller but the Next Gen version fixed that so now you run with the left joystick instead of pushing a button and choosing a sign isn't near as clunky as it was before. Now you pick signs the same way as you pick abilities in Odyssey and they ditched the signs wheel. Here not only do you have a clunky wheel to chose a weapon they put it on the opposite side everyone else does it (Most games use the left bumper for a weapons wheel) and it's even more awkward trying to switch weapons quickly. If they redid the game with a 64 bit EXE so it could use more memory for meshes and textures and then use Origins'/Odyssey's control system they could remake this game and have a real winner but I think they are more interested in selling microtransactions and NFTs these days

Honestly my main issue was the controls not working the way they were said to, but you're right. These are all huge design flaws.

I don't know how to do these self-help tech supports. I came here to play a game. Not learn how all of my electronics are coded. It's a problem with the game and should be fixed by the devs, not the players.

Actually the game never has worked correctly with an Xbox One or newer controller. The game originally used the old DirectInput API and never was upgraded to use the newer Xinput API . The easiest way to get a controller to work with the least amount of hassle is to use this Mod from Nexus which also gives you better LODs and shadows as well as gives you the UPlay bonuses that are unavailable since Ubisoft shut down the servers for this and other older AC titles and it also skips the opening videos so the game loads faster
