I started a playthrough from start-to-finish of the AC series (well.. only just finished Revelations, but we're moving slowly!) several years back, and I was impressed by the story and gameplay transition from AC1 to AC2 and onwards.
Story-wise it's really worth it, and I think you'll enjoy the backstory from the first to the second game too. It connects the dots, as I know some people have started with AC2 and perhaps regretted it in hindsight.
When you do progress to AC2, you'll then appreciate the huge step up it makes in terms of gameplay and scale (although the maps - unfortunately mostly unused - are seriously impressive in AC1, perhaps telling of its desire to always be a truly expansive game).
Need convincing still? Have a read through this discussion here where someone was asking the same question.
If you're really not feeling playing through from the start, although I would encourage it, but if you're not, grab yourself a 100% save file from SavesForGames[savesforgames.com], then save it to the save data path (see below if needed), and then replay the memory from where you last left off.
Save data path here (see PCGamingWIki[www.pcgamingwiki.com]):
If you're not feeling that even, then I'd give the game movie a watch to tie things together:

If you don't bother yourself with side quests, finishing AC1 is a matter of less than 10 hours.
