Can't Select/Shoot Pistol?

I'm having trouble using the pistol, and even the throwing knives. I can't select them on the weapon wheel for some reason, which I'm assuming might be by design? The help tips tell me that I can just hold down click, but nothing has happened, and it's causing me to be stuck on a mission.

Also, what game comes after AC2?

How to use a weapon in ac2:
step 1: press and hold q to open weapon wheel
step 2: move your mouse to highlight the weapon you want to select
step 3: release q button and there you have it
for using the pistol, lock in to your desired target, hold left click, then release
and also assassin's creed brotherhood comes after ac2
