Steam Controller support
No matter what I do, it seems that the steam controller just doesn't want to work properly for this game. I'm unable to map buttons properly, the default does something COMPLETELY different than what it's supposed to do (A=jump, but it really opens the menu). The game is unplayable with a steam controller. Any advice?

The Steam Controller is definitely difficult to get working. By default it tries to use settings designed for navigating the Big Picture mode, which are nonsensical for game use. To change the settings so that A = A, B = B, etc., you have to browse to your library in Big Picture, select Axiom Verge, and then configure the input on the Axiom Verge page. There are some suggested mappings in there from other users so it's fastest to just pick one of those.

(If anyone knows a faster way of doing this please let me know.)

Yes thats exactly what I did 2 weeks ago. Today out of the blue I cant get the game to recognize the mapping at all!

I posted about this earlier on an other thread: this is direcly related to an update that was pushed out at 11PM PST last night to address an issue people are having with the game not starting up. I was playing about an hour before, went and did something else and when I came back there was an Axiom Verge update and the Steam controller stopped working (well, I sometimes get to hit one button in the menu before it completely quits on me). The only way I find out of the game is to bring up the overlay and exit the game. .

I'm running SteamOS/Linux.

It's my fault for updating to the latest version of SDL2; somehow it makes Steam forget the setting. After opening Big Picture, re-opening the screen with the controller config, exiting without doing anything, then playing the game once from within Big Picture, it seems to "refresh" and get the settings back.

Hang on let me get this straight so you are saying if I turn controller on select big picture mode...and then exit out of big picure (without doing anything) and go back into big picture should keep the settings correctly?

Can you also check the game settings when you are setting the controller...before the patch I was able to select A for fire and B for jump while in Game...this is no longer the case the settings are hard coded and the game does not recognize when you re-assigned a key.

The ONLY work around I been able to do is to go under keyboard settings and press the button on the controller when am selecting jump, fire etc...but the rest of the commands are broken.

This trick didn't work for me. The only way I can play he game now is by mapping all the keyboard keys to the controller. It's not ideal but it mostly works... I do miss the weapon select screen though. Is there a "Next Weapon" key? This would work much better than what I'm doing.

Are you configuring the controller within Big Picture? It's under Axiom Verge -> Manage Game -> Configure Controller.

Then either try to assign the keys yourself or go to Browse Configs to pick another user's configuration.

I turn controller on > big picture mode > configure controller aka select my template for game >start game.

Go into game pad settings try to assign a to fire , b to jump game does not even acknowledge when I push the controller button as before.

Spent about an hour trying to figure this to no avail. Even tried steam beta and reinstall game also.

Update - after installing Steam Beta client - everything works as intended. Stupid, simple fix.

I get this issue all the time too: when I wake up my Steam Controller and I start up the game and load a save, then the buttons are scrambled (e.g. A button opens the menu). One thing I have found that works is to get out of the game, pull the USB for the Steam Controller out and let it disconnect, then reconnect it and start up the game again. Pretty consistently, this fixes the issue.

Until the next day, of course. :)

(BTW, great game - I really love what you've done here!)

I open a separate thread on this section (am running linux) had to change controllers permission and now it works flawlessly

Bumping but this is the problem I'm having. I can't even navigate the menu easily. As everyone else says, in game, A is the menu button and I can' shoot. One button makes all the controls stop working, and I have to hit Q on they keyboard to be 'back'. I had to hard quit the game because I could not figure out how to navigate out of the MENU for three or four tries. Backspace, no. Escape no. Enter? No. Space? No. Q... Q was the 'back' button so I can exit the video settings so I can play it at full screen.

Sometimes A on the steam controller is select, sometimes B is back. Sometimes A is menu, sometimes Q on the keyboard is back.

Every config I can find has ABXY mapped to ABXY and barely anything else is changed (one or two buttons changed on the shoulder/trigger). I'm going to have to map the controller to individual keys like I do with other games because nothing else seems to work?

Seriously, I've been hyped for this game for over a year and now I can't even do keyboard mapping to cheat the controls in with the steam controller. This game seems to crash a lot for me (seems to be a problem with mac) so I need to figure out how to get it to stop crashing my steam (not even running the game, just trying to modify the controls for it in big picture), crashes randomly, and I the controller mapping is ridiculous. Should I just be forced to play on keyboard because the controls seems totally confounding otherwise. I have to somehow make Q both a button for back (typically B on the keyboard) but it's also an Unknown 3 whatever? So I can't even map the mystery things to the D-Pad and move with the analog. I am not doing any of the risky workarounds like disabling some things in mac in safe mode or loading up the game, quitting, unplugging and replugging in the steam controller dongle and opening the game again -every time- I want to play the game. Seriously, the workarounds people have had to make to get this to work for mac is astounding. I am so, so sad right now.
The steam controller has an issue with setting the correct mapping if you turn it on AFTER starting the game. If you start the game and have the regular non-big picture overlay (it doesnt matter if your Steam itself is in big Picture mode), then your bindings will not work
