Flamethrower is just one of the best there is in general.
And all those «too many weapons» make me think that if you give someone more options than they want to use [and master any one of them!], they will complain about it. Don't get me wrong, at first I though something similar to what you wrote.
Then I started finding weapon/tool/drone power upgrades, and it increased the DPS of everything.
Moreover, when you replay the game again and again. you find for most weapons where each one of them shines better and where it certainly does not.
