Athetos did nothing wrong *spoilers for the entire game*
Man, I hope I didn't butcher his name. Anyway, I don't think he was necessarily wrong. He wanted to take the science and technology to build a utopia back to Earth but the Sudrans wouldn't let him. Sudra had its chance: the Sudrans once had immortality and wanted for nothing, and instead cast it aside in favor of being primitives. Sudra was once a port for travelers from parallel universes. How many worlds were paying the price for Sudran ignorance?

In your final conversation with him, Athetos hints that there was more to the story than what Trace had been told. I wonder what else happened? Did he try a peaceful solution first? What did he learn in the paradise he found upstream? In any case, I kind of felt like the bad guy after I beat him.

If nothing else, I'd like to hear others discuss what they thought of the game's plot. ^_^

I know how you feel but he kind of did. Athetos had the power and he chose for everyone. A single guy chose a whole planet needs to die out because he felt the tech needs be brought back to Earth. Maybe that is exactly why the Sudrans chose the path of devolution. While the tech can potentially build a utopia, it comes with the price of eventual anarchy and arrogance.

However, I DO feel and agree that Athetos was more than the Rusalki told Trace. In a way, the Rusalki were pushing THEIR side of the stoyr and Trace was constantly fed how Athetos is pure evil and nothing else. Especially Elsenova and I feel like she is actually up to something.

Trace was in the middle of a fight between two groups and both groups lied to him and witheld info from him.

I am slightly confused by the ending but I doubt anyone is capable of time manipulation so I do not think Trace went back in time and got another chance. It is probably another illusion created for him while the Rusalki guard his sleeping body maybe in fear he would turn into the next Athetos which is MAYBE implied by the criptic old man Athetos telling Trace to wake up.

I felt a whole lot of "would you kindly" vibes from the Rusalki. Athetos may have even been tricked or framed into releasing the pathogen by the Rusalki. Trace and the Sudrans believed he was responsible, at the words of the Old Machines. Probably the plan was to kick out the pathogen, kill all the Sudrans and Athetos, and Elsenova would've been unimpeded from destroying the Breach Attractor and then the Rusalki were free to do whatever. But then the one Rusalka grew a spine, Athetos found his way to survive the pathogen and cut off the Rusalki from power and repairs and then he had to play the waiting game.

Athetos was presumably allowed to pass through the first time without any problems...

I really like your point :D
I myself feel the Rusalki have an agenda. Elsenova acts that way a lot. Trace had zero chance to learn anything, they lied to him and nurtured him around their ideas.

"If I tell you any more, they will kill you."
(something like that)

It is clear they like the fact that Trace is happy inside his fake dream unable to do anything although......

This is a really interesting idea. If the Rusalki were behind the pathogen, perhaps Athetos originally returned to Sudra to with gifts of knowledge and technology, with the goal of ultimately moving their civilization forward again and then carrying out his mission to Earth. It would be interesting if the "pathogen" was actually a medical tool made by Athetos to help the Sudrans, only to have it corrupted by the Rusalki for their own benefit.

I don't doubt that Athetos could do evil if he felt he had to, but I don't buy for a minute that he was actually a bad person at heart. Having his original mission be peaceful would also explain why he was allowed to carry advanced technology back from whatever world he visited after he left Sudra. I'm pretty sure it was described as a utopia at least once during the game, and I can't envision people from a perfect society sanctioning mass murder.
