Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction

Tired of rollercoaster FPS? Conviction fans. Look here!
This is an old favorite game of mine. At this point in time I´m running a FX8320 @4GHz, an OC´ed 7950 (beating th GTX680 in passmark) 12gb ram @1866MHz (CL9). On top of all this I have it installed on my SSD. STILL I had to turn down the settings to get a playable game. Horrible port, have always been this way. I took it upon my self to find a solution. And guess what? I did!

Go to your conviction.ini, it is in the installation folder. For me, for example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction\src\system
Make sure you have admin rights so you can save the new settings we are about to change.

In the conviction.ini there are 3 lines that handles threading. All these should be set to true.
2 of them are identical under different categorys:
bThreadPhys=True
bThreadPhys=True
Threading=true
Decals=True
Batches=True

Also, I enabled tripplebuffer:
UseTripleBuffering=True

Then we have the cashe size, original is 4mb. I changed this to 64. The line is:
CacheSizeMegs=128

This made a huge difference for me, allowing me to use 8x MSAA without any issues for the first time. Hopefully this is something that helps everyone.

Have a nice night of gaming!

And IF this helps pretty much anyone and everyone.
Perhaps we can make this sticky?

Feedback would be nice. =)

Edit/Update:
Kobins Mansion: 77fps (with changes) vs 67 without them.
Airfield: 46 without changes. 50 with.
So not the uber fix ala deluxe grand. But 11 FPS in Kobins Mansion is not that bad and on the airfield I got only 5 but a lot smoother. As stated earlier. This has given me a way smoother experience. Cheers!

UseAIReplicationDelayOverride=True gave me general protection errors and the rest did not help at all, I'm on the flashback level (not sure if it's just poorly optimized) and I'm only getting 41-46 fps.

I5 3330
8GB RAM
GTX 760 2 GB

Hmm. Ok, weird. Might be that the threading liked 8 cores. After extencive testing. I must revise some of stuff in the original post. What this did for me was a working smooth framerate fix more than pure fps. Ran through the entire game in 1 sitting =) I hardly ever felt the slowdown since the jumps in fps was far more gradual than before when it could go from 60 to 30 in 2 frames. I will keep working on this and update. For me this did make a huge difference. Just goes to show how much the hardware effects our own experices. This is one of the worst ports in history. Glad this atlest helped me. was really hoping that it would help others as well.

It's not just the flashback level either, it's the entire game, I have drops to the 30's and 40's but then when I get to the next area I get a constant 60...

Thanks for trying anyway, if you can make it so it can work on my rig, would it also be possible for you to make a tweak to disable Depth of Field?

The flashback lvl has always been the worst for as well. But today it actually was playable. I got the DLC today, so I´m looking into the ini now, then try it out on one of those lvl´s.
I will look into it. Depth, not FOW?

Yeah, I just don't like the blured effect in 3rd peron games.

Jusr played the lumber yeard, pretty much totally lag free. =) Made a few tweaks upon the other stuff:
I increased the FOV a bit as well: FovAngleDegrees=105.000000

Got 2 lines you can test.
Decals=True (on 2 places)
BatchEnabled=True (2 places as well)

There is an option that I think fixed the depth. But it´s in an different ini. Located at
C:\ProgramData\Ubisoft\Conviction
In that ini there is a line that says:
TransparentDOF=False try setting it to true and see if it helps.

Almost 3am, time for bed. =)

those framerates have to be better than before the changes, right? Stop whining "I only get 40 fps" Somebody posted a fix and your just going to complain about it. Its a poor port to begin with. Complain to ubisoft not people trying to help or come up with a solution YOUR OWN DAMN SELF!

As stated above. After extensive tests, playing the entire game, this gave me a solid bump in rates and foremost a much much smoother gaming experience. Mine too was down around 40 at times but it didn´t feel laggy when it went up/down, like it always has before. I´m on an AMD 8 core, so perhaps not strange that enabeling threading helped me more than the i5 quad. =)

Thanks for the help AlbusDix SwE this is much more help than anyone has given so far. And your right 40 fps is not laggy compared to when your down to 1 fps at times. Again, THANX

Thanks anyway but I wasn't complaining I was just saying I get 40fps without these tweaks too, it's like they game itself just caps it to 47 when looking at certain objects. But thanks for the help regardless.

After a RAID setup I lost my game, so I am re-DL it now. I will benchmark an entire level with fraps, then, shut down the game, apply these changes and do it all over again. Interesting to see the results. =D

Ok. So I´m posting here insteaed of an edit on top. I benched Kobins Mansion with fraps. Before the changes I got a 55 average, after the changes I got 77. Reason I didt edit my original post to include these numbers, I forgot to turn off v-sync in the first test so the game could not go past 60 even if/when it wanted to, witch of course will mess upp the average. Have to redo it witch original settings before I can conclude anything.

Kobins Mansion: 77fps (with changes) vs 67 without them. Airfield: 46 without changes. Update coming soon, benchmark with the changes when I get back.

UUUUUUUUUUUH. I THINK I DID SOMETHING WRONG. The game runs better, BUT it freezes every 20 minutes or so. (Have to CTRL + ALT + DEL to snap the game back to work.) Any help on this one guys?
