From Steam settings or from File Explorer?

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction\src\system\conviction_game.exe

1. Right click on conviction_game.exe, then select Properties.
2. Change the compatibility mode to Windows Vista

Basically, tying to play Ubisoft's games without Uplay is same as trying to play PC games without the serial keys. If you are unlucky, however, you cannot play some Ubisoft's games even if you have Uplay installed on your PC in advance because of the problem "The serial key is alwready in use by another Uplay account." which should not happen of course. But Ubisoft do not give ♥♥♥♥ to the problem. I got the full refund for Watch_Dogs due to this problem. Since then, I swore that I will never buy Ubisoft games for PC.

So, if you guys have not played this game longer than 2 hours, I recommend to get the refund.

I play this game on Windows 10. I was having the same problem. So I installed Uplay then I start the game through that client and it worked. I hope it helps. :)

So I should link my Steam account with an Uplay one?

Yes, also you have to activate the game on Uplay through the CD key.

What about the multiplayer? Does it work?

You need to put both the Conviction.exe and UbiGameLauncher into Vista compatability mode.
The Ubigamelauncher is in the redist folder, Conviction.exe is in the src folder.
