Riding the Dragon
I use PC, keyboard and mouse, and I cant successfully latch on to the dragons back. When i get the blue circle on the back, i try and reel in, and the dragons legs interrupt my trip onto its back. So in order, press esc. wait for the dragon to line up on the bridge, face the way he is flying in (N by NW), jump off the bridge, hold TAB till i get a blue circle on the body, immediately hold spacebar, reel in towards my anchor point on its back, and catch the tail, or feet and am dislodged fall or float down to the floor below.

What else should I be doing?

You shouldn’t be doing anything. The dragon automatically picks you up.

No this mission is the one where it wants me to remove/destroy the spears in its back, called Shackles of Fate, Sub Chapter Shattered Ties, Chapter IX
Do a forum search.

The TL;DR is: wear the Gloves / Stirrups of the Open sky and use the ESC key to reload if you miss, you'll be doing it at least 30 times before you manage it.

ok, ill look into those two pieces of equipment
I just got stuck on this yesterday. You need to fly away from the bridge as far as possible before latching on or you will collide with the bridge and get pulled off even though your still like 30 metres away from the bridge.
Stuck here currently also. Got demoralized and went to bed after a dozen falls.

Would you suggest flying towards the dragon as he lines up (against the flow of traffic) or time it to jump down on him as he flys away from the bridge?
Try from the top rather than the bottom, mayber?

I am on PC but use a controller. It took me forever to figure out whre to stand and successfully land the axiom force.

I hgihly reccomend gettting above the dragon where it passed undeer the bridge in the city and shooting down/across to it. At first i tried falling to it, jumping to it, flying to it. None of it worked for me.

IF he passed by and you miss, you can hit start and it makes him reset to just before coming over. It took me forever to figure this out. It takes him like 5 mins tocycle around naturally.

I always jump off from the top, float down or towards the dragon and use the grabby thing using TAB, and get good contact, but fail because when i reel in, i hit the legs

IF youre coming from teh top how are you hitting the legs?

What youre doing sounds good but try not floating down that may be causing the issue.

When i hooked onto him, i didnt have to reel in or press anything. Just hitting him with axiom did it for me.
like with many other quests the game misleads you with incomplete information. Here is the technique I found works best:
1) You position yourself in the middle of the bridge and go on the edge from where the dragon appears
2) As the dragon gets closer and ligns itself up with the bridge you jump off the bridge and spread your wings falling gently while aiming for the dragon
3) You prepare yourself with the axiom force key (TAB) and as soon as you get the lightblue dot you release it.
4) As soon as it latches on you press AND hold the jump key (SPACE) to reel yourself in.

Congrats, now you're a dragon rider. He will try to throw you off multiple times, just hit resist (Q) when it happens. If you're running out of stamina have a tea ready to replenish it. And then when the game tells you use focused force palm and you're done.
Here's a copy of a post I put up a while back..

At first, I thought I had to use Axiom this and that, just to get to the back, but then found out you just glide onto it.. here's the post...

Here is a copy of a post about it that I put up a week or so back...

The quest gives the illusion that you need to jump, float around somehow aim at a spot on it's back , somehow target it with axiom force... forget all of that.. here's what I posted and it really worked for me...

=================================

Wow.. just finished the quest.. kind of super easy, now that I figured it out... so, here's what I did to complete it...

Axiom has NOTHING TO DO with getting on it's back, even though the quest says to use it... forget about Axiom...

I stood on the bridge, above where the dragon would fly underneath. When I saw the dragon in the distance, even though it was far away, I jumped and used the floating thing instantly and headed strait for the dragon.. no speed bursts, just nice and slow... at first I thought I was a bit higher up, but the dragon started rising towards me.. I saw the purple on top of its back and simply FLOATED strait for it, nice and easy, no axiom anything.. It wasn't exact, but when I was about 5 or 10 feet away, the game AUTOMATICALLY put me on the dragon's back.. no buttons, no Axiom.. it just put me on the back...

I DID get knocked off from one of the cannon/rocket things that the towers were shooting ( just dumb luck that one hit me ).. but that was ok.. I knew how to get on the back at that point.. I got back on the bridge, started to float as soon as I jumped..headed strait for the dragon and it automatically put me on it's back again...

Oh.. make sure you have a few points into your stamina, because it'll try to toss you off two times.. on the bottom right of your screen, it will show you what button you need to HOLD, when it tries to toss you off.. LT on Xbox.

After the two attempts to toss you off, you will be told what to do, to knock out the spear in it's back.. and.. it's over..

Sorry bout my 2am rant.. the quest telling you to use Axiom to grab it, while you are floating in the air, while trying to get close to the dragon.. honestly.. lol.. this is my 3am after-rant..

I hope these instructions help anyone else who was going crazy, trying to use axiom and all that...
This quest is one of the most poorly designed I have ever come across. Honestly the ONLY thing in the game that made me want to rage quit - because of how it's attached to the story. I am firmly of the belief that no game should have story that will effectively be blocked if you can't complete a task like this.

I'd ignore the Axiom Force altogether (despite what others say). You can just drop into the dragon's path and EVENTUALLY if you line up your drop from the bridge just right, the dragon just scoops you up if you're directly in it's path. Then you just need to use "Q" to resist when it thrashes (and manage your stamina, of course).

But the hitbox to collide with the dragon, ESPECIALLY if using Axiom Force, is wildly unforgiving.

I'd have much rather it be a QTE - at least then it would just require some practice to hit the right rhythm.
yeah, just dive right onto the dragon's back where the spear is, no need for axiom, then force palm the spear loose, is how I (FINALLY) managed to do it. :steamsalty: takes incredible timing to intercept drago.. it moves faster than it looks.
Actually most of th8s can be skipped. You could do all that. Or just hold on until end and it automatically gives you credit. Or you can punch bond right away and just hold on for credit.
