The best armor so far is the one you get from the boss that unlocks in chapter 7 in the ice fields.

Except for the gauntlents. The best gauntlents are the ones you win in a tournament, as they have elemental affinity and hit with energy,
That's a good start. Any plate armour will do later on in the game. Pump defence and later mid-late game change defense abyss gear for damage reduction once you meet witches for upgrades. Somewhere mid game you should meet all 4 required witches that will unlock upgrading all required abyss gears. Crits, damage, attack speed...what you prefer. Don't stack that on armor since it only boosts unnarmed damage then instead stack it on weapons you use alongside the skills and skill damage boost like Momentum. Unlock elemental skills for weapon use as fast as you can and you're set. You have a long way to go.
im using Kairos Plate Set free give from deluxe edition it is fire resistance armor but i add extra abyss gem cold resistance to it..and put all the free abyss gem to it climbing fast gem , swimming fast gem , and stamina gem:steamhappy:
It all is based on sockets slots end game and as long as the equipment is refinable. To be able to gain max stats that is, I'm rockin' a Ziggurat cloth helm, because it's my Majora's Mask in this game, looks so kewl.

Sure there are equipment pieces that start off with higher based stats but again as long as you stick with it and keep upgrading it long enough it eventually matches in the end because there is only so much armor attack etc your playable character benefits from based off of percentage drop off up to certain limitations for instance defense up to 100 falls off tremendously post 100 points exceeded from say, 50 to 100. Anyway if all this sounds like gibberish then just do what ya want man it's all good either way this game doesn't punish you for going against the grain and I can't stress this enough: there is no meta to CD which is awesome, really.

tldr: all is good you wanna rock the bunny ears go for it, you wanna rock the lich king blazeit420xxx armor pieces go for it

in the end

it doesn't really matter

There is no absolute best armor in this game imo. It's usually just go with wear whatever you find the coolest looking stuff that are preferably also upgradable

This.

There are also many people who have 250- 300 + hours in the game now who are hinting the same, at least from what I've gathered from YT vids.

No best armor. Only what you find "cool" looking. They are all the same regarding the stats. Plate, leather etc, have hard cap, but if you wanna survive you go plate. Wanna really cool looking sets? You bet your hiney you gonna have to dump a lot of cores into survival.

There are no better armors. All armors have the same base stats. I ve been exploring and searching for armors almost 100 hours and didnt found any which is better than my starter armor. There are just a few with unique abilites like the laser helmet but they are weak AF because u can upgrade them only with the kuku-pot.
grab an armor and a mantle that has heat resist and cold resist and thats your best armor
The dif is very minimal, pick the armor u like the most with the most sockets, the gears is what make gear good
Its mostly cosmetic what matters is the Abyss Gear you slot into it and a few armors have unique skills but they are very situational and not very good for regular use like the Laser Helm just pick what looks best for you and slot some decent Abyss Gear on it.

Most of them kinda same stats, so i just stick with my Kairos deluxe edition armor. Refine it and put some useful abyss gear.
Plate armors are kinda the heavy armors in this game, so from the perspective of raw defense value...

But trust us, you can go typical light to med armor defense and still be fine. I mean I beat main story with level 7 hernandian honor guard.
The difference for max upgrade could be 10+ for each type, but there are options for boosting def besides upgrading if needed; the like more hp, upgraded abyss gear setup(def +9 and damage reduction 3.0), elixir, anvil, and those little extras from necklaces, trinkets. The defense greater elixir, for example, can give you a boost up to 30 def, which is basically around one med armor max value; and that 15 min duration could last the entire fight. If players can total 50-100 def, around level 7+ hp, my guesstimation anyone could just do fine for the late main contents, involving spamming their food.

The true one-shotties and damage sponge are just optional encounters. The first time I considered involving any plate extra was against the Forgotten general, pretending it would do anything against his sneeze. But I've yet to find a design that I like, so I guess I'll just save that encounter for later. I also stupidly just realized the other day that you need this one specific material for the max upgrade, just to show a system you can sleep on, to some extent.
I stopped searching for armor pieces after obtaining the Sunset Reed armor.
Kliff must carry on the legacy of being a masked vigilante. *shrugs*

Best defence would be awareness, agility, adaptability.
And nothing some food can't fix. *wink*
