Witcher, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and Shadow of War are the first games that jump to mind.
All of those are based on pre-existing books / films / characters, though.
They're propped-up by the decades and decades of writing.
Crimson Desert is trying to create a brand-new universe centered around this generic dude (before the dev sees this; No, I am not asking to replace him with an immortal spunky sarcastic female protag), and I don't see this succeeding to the degree that it could if there were character creation available to the players instead of stuffing you into the boots of a specific person and forcing you to play a specific role in the world.
