Updates kill my fishies

Every couple month this game updates, and when it does my game progress gets wiped and instead of "start adventure" it says "Level 0-0" and is all funky when you try to play.
My screensaver tank is empty, and the only thing to do is make a new player in game and start anew.

It happened to me for the third time today and I am ever so sad. Why do they still update this game? Is there a way to save my fishies?

likely your savegame files are being corrupted

they are located at
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Insaniquarium\userdata
each .dat file corresponds to 1 user

here's my .dat file that I autosync to cloud storage, if you want an example (also 100%'d the game and pets except challenge mode if you want to use it)

if you open it in a hex editor it's all just random hex because the game does some serialisation / de-serialisation behind the scenes, so you cant repair your .dat file manually
