It is still too early to draw conclusions but you understand that it is a big cliffhanger, maybe the Forgotten Key Devs have something in mind.
Anyway Forgotten Key Devs said they are working on a new project of which don't yet want to say anything but they haven't even ruled out the hypothesis of a sequel.
...and sincerely if you allow, I prefer to wait and see, since the ambiance-lore of the game created is fantastic and has one of the best animal flight systems that you can find on the square. I would be much more than happy if a sequel came out.
I spent a lot of time examining the lore and the story, I did a second playthrough in fact just to make sure I'd found everything.
I like open-endings to games but this one left me feeling abandoned rather than with a feeling of wonder and curiosity. For example Journey was a game with an open ending that left me feeling fufilled.
I agree with Mandrake42 above that a game shouldn't need a sequel to tell you the ending of the previous game.
The game is effecively over once you finish the third shrine. The whole journey back, activating the lighthouse, going to the creators shrine, all are just an extended cutscene with no more real gameplay. No more puzzles to solve, no more places to explore.
And the "ghosts". What are they? The imprints of some strong feelings? And where did ALL PEOPLE go? There were a plenty in The Land of Gods... Before...
I have a theory that The Creator = The Void-thing. Because of ruined "wings" (a fallen angel reference!) and, most importantly, a large hole in place of the heart. See? The Creator tried to rip his heart because of Void corruption, but he was late, I assume...
I agree it could have had some puzzles or what not.
Also it seems pretty clear that they were both obliterated and the world begins to heal. The achievement is, after all, called "equilibrium".
