Can't get past the start screen. Need help.

The game starts up perfectly and all the start screen animations and sounds are playing fine. However, when I press "enter" to start, nothing happens.

I know it recognized the key input because I have to hit "esc" then "enter" to quit (Which for some reason I can do, even though I can't start it.) And I assume "enter" is the correct key to continue because it has the same arrow icon when I quit the game. Just in case, I hit every key on my keyboard and mouse and clicked all over the screen just to make sure. I also left it sitting for a while since maybe there was it was loading in the background or something, but still nothing.

Just bought the game an hour ago and I am itching to play. Wish I could!

I had this exact issue after downloading/installing (tried running it a few times, always could use enter to quit the game but not to get to the game selection menu). I had some Windows updates to run so did a reboot (also applied the latest version of the Steam client during this process) and the game worked consistently after this.

Sorry that's not a specific fix suggestion but if you tried to play as soon as you'd installed it, maybe give it a reboot and see if that fixes it (or make sure you're running the latest Steam client & have all the latest Windows updates applied).

Just updated windows the night before I bought it. I'll try updating steam too and restarting. I'm not sure if it is relevant, but I have steam and most of my games on an external hard drive. I logged into steam on a different computer and it works fine.

Windows update did the trick.
It probably has to do something with Windows Defender on Windows 10, after updating or disabling it, the game started working again...

I updated windows/the steam client and turned off windows defender and I still can't hit the start button. :\ Can't play the game right now.
