Extremely helpful support reply! Not enough game support teams are this good. Hope this solution helps you guys too.
I did all that, and all it did was apparently cause me to lose all my local data as well as my cloud data. Now it looks like my progress is completely lost.
edit: reading between the lines it sounds as though this was the expected outcome, but I'm puzzled as to how this can be considered a fix since it only caused me to lose what little data I had remaining.
