I think the tank controls work for this style of game; however, I am not opposed to them adding in an alternate control scheme (like the Remaster of the Resident Evil Remake did). Only thing to watch out there for is the camera changes: if you played with the alternate control scheme in the Remaster, every time the camera changed, you'd have to reorient your control stick or your character would run off in the wrong direction. So... something to keep in mind.
It might be better to play on a keyboard and mouse when using tank controls instead of with a gamepad. At least thats what my experience thought me.
