I haven't tried it myself because I haven't bought The Sims 2 yet. I want to feel more confident that the game won't crash constantly and that I'll be able to play in a way that suits me before buying it.
If you want to do it legally as possible and don't mind having to do extra work to get it running, there is an Guide of installing disc version of The Sims 2[shinki26.tumblr.com] and it then finding the disc version of EP/SP second-hand as well as the base game.
I would like to have the game on Steam but it would be great to be able to choose which expansion packs to use, so I'll have a think and decide which way to do it. That guide looks incredibly helpful if I do choose the disc version - thank you for the link!
