The reason why this still needs an epic account is because cross platform and cross progression is made possible through exactly that account. You can play your pc save on consoles aswell. Its just not really worth the development time to build an inhouse solution to something that has already been solved properly by a vendor, especially if you still would need an account eitherway.
As usual the hate for epic and the hate for needing third party linking gets in the way of actually understanding why this was done. But yeah writing these comes much easier.
cross platform/cross progression is usually an option, especially when a 3rd party account is required for it to work. many, many games do it this way, and Dauntless easily could have as well. if i remember correctly, dauntless was influenced/paid by Epic to keep their game off of steam and to make their users create an account for their game. i played this back on launch, it didn't need one then. Epic Online Services can be used without an account, it's not an inherent requirement, and neither is crossplay.
there is no functional reason that this game requires that account to operate, it's a decision made by the developers, and it's a reasonable decision of potential customers to avoid their product because of it. there are plenty of reasons to avoid 3rd party accounts, and even moreso to avoid Epic, and I can do both just fine alongside clearly understanding their reasons for implementation.
Only the devs know what actually happened between epic and them. You are guessing.
Usually doesnt mean always. If you know the inner workings of Epic's crossplay system then we would be talking. Again you are just guessing.
What is a fact though is that the current devs are almost completely different devs from even 2 years ago. Many game devs studio had a lot of difficulty over the last few years and Phoenix definitely was one of them. So yeah, new devs with new goals and a new update.
I wont even ask you to give them a chance because you really only came here to critique the cross linking that is necessary.
Eitherway, if others read this. Not everything is bad and you dont need to jump on the epic hatewagon, as a matter of fact, if you had joined EGS when it all started you would have a library of 200+ games for free as there are at least 1-2 games free to keep each week :)
The rich irony of someone saying you shouldn't "jump on the epic hatewagon" on the STEAM forums. Mate, if I had a pro-Epic worldview, I wouldn't be on Steam at all, and as a Steam user I absolutely have the right to criticize non-functional middleware that does nothing but lock me out of games I've purchased.
I made an Epic account for the free release of Total War Troy (a game I was eagerly anticipating), thinking "Okay, Epic, this is your one chance to impress me." Suffice to say it didn't, and when Troy came to Steam, I bought it there and deleted my Epic account. Since then, it's been "no Steam, no buy".
Judging by your icon, I'm not the only person who is furious at Epic for not only dropping support for UT4, but also wiping the entire Unreal Tournament library from the internet. Arena shooters must not die.
The entire Unreal Series, including all of the Unreal Tournament games are on archive.org with Epic's blessing. even the unfinished UT4 was uploaded to Archive.org and it looks like they even uploaded the server software needed to run servers for the game.
Also, Arena shooters died many years before Epic decided to not finish UT4.
They did recently decide to crack down on companies not delivering on unreleased content...
