There's only one traditional-in-your-face Alan Wake 2/FNAF-style jump scare, which is a sneaky easter egg found in the menu but there are a few sudden scares, such as when you're walking past the table and the plates fly off.

But for the most part, it's creepy and unsettling rather than constantly terrifying.

Yes. There's button to turn them on, but it's a prank. It just gives you a jumpscare, then the option vanishes and the game doesn't change in any way.
