It is a scam because they are charging $30 for a "game" that has probably not been worked on. They apparently inherited assets of a game called Chaos Chronicles years back. When you play Demons Age you can see that these assets are still in very rudimentary form and never assembled or worked on to create a game worth anywhere near $30.

Oh, and they were going to charge $60 for this game, before I exposed them on RPGWatch some months back, and their tune changed (they delayed their release.)

Now they sneakily release the game to no press of any kind.

Let's put it this way. There are zero interesting features in this game. There is nothing implemented that is even BASIC, expected of an RPG in 2017. To recap, there is no character creation, no leveling up and selecting skills, perks, ANYTHING at level up. There are no dialogue options (you can SKIP or SKIP ALL, that's it), there are no combat features other than a Standard Attack. No balance whatsoever, battles are painfully slow and the engine lags because it was never worked on from the Chaos Chronicles days. Enemies and your characters just slog through standard attacking for several rounds until it's over. Enemies don't drop loot. Chests can be empty, and the chests in the first area had 3 pairs of the same exact shoes repeat in each one. There are no options or settings to really tweak, and the mouse cursor is not well implemented as you can't click correctly on certain objects. And so on.

To then try and pass this thing off as a $30 game is an insult, and in my opinion, yes, it's a scam. One that goes further than we can know because these "developers" somehow get their games released on console, too.

There is nothing here warranting any sort of price near $30. I wouldn't play it for free in this state, let alone PAY for it. I question if the game is even playable after a certain time, if anyone would dare torture themselves long enough to find out.

Well.. yeah, you've got a point.

Despite his questionable ability of late, perhaps someone should contact SidAlpha. He does a segment on dodgy devs and if you've been fighting this for a bit, then perhaps it needs highlighting as such.

Feel free. I'm just going to post about it on the usual RPG sites. I'm passionate about gaming and RPGs especially and will speak out when I see this sort of thing happening.

The fact it was originally going to sell for $60 really set me off. The developer then posted on RPGWatch about "features" of the game and how they are going to add basic things that it should already have had and blah blah blah. This was months ago. Then all of a sudden the game was "alpha", yet before I said how poor the game was it was set to release days after I posted. They delayed it then. Now the "devs" just posted the same spiel on this very forum about adding features later. Then to see it sneakily released in the middle of the night trying to put one over on people, really pisses me off.

The craziest part is, they actually ship console versions of these "games". I wonder how many people have been scammed that way. All of their other "creations" have very bad reviews, terrible even. 25% and lower on their console "games" on Metacritic.

To the devs - grow up. Make something legit. Stop stealing people's money. Find another route.

Trouble is so many other developers do the same kind of thing it is hard for some developers to not think 'I want my slice of the cake'. The whole scene kinda matches the morals of the Rep party.

No.

Other devs may do some of this to varying degrees, but this is worse than that. This is scam territory, IMO.

Maybe I'm not making myself clear enough. If you look at their other "games", they have very, very bad reviews. Look up some of their console "ports" on Metacritic and you'll see. They have ratings below 25% in some cases, many reporting the games being flat-out broken.

Now, devs can make a bad game or two, of course, but this is very suspicious. This is recurring broken, terrible games. Their games get terrible reviews and reports of issues that were never fixed, and then they have a very quick turnaround to making the next game and repeating the process.

Demons Age possesses nothing that a modern 2017 RPG should have. And I'm not saying that as some scathing criticism for a bad game. It's an RPG where you can't do the most basic of things. There are no special attacks in combat, no leveling up of your characters, no dialogue options with NPCs and many more glaring omissions. This shows me that they put zero effort into this and simply repackaged the unfinished Chaos Chronicles assets to try and make a quick buck. There are also many other suspicious things regarding this company, such as their website for the game not even being updated upon the release (and the trailer still showing Q1 2016.) And the developer posting months ago on RPGWatch about adding features, disappearing and never responding, and then on this forum posting the same spiel. And releasing the game to no press of any kind, secretly. All of this reeks.

In my opinion, they are not legitimate developers.

That sums it up. They never change (improve, patch) anything from the (failed) games they publish...

Even the trailer on Steam still shows the old planned release date...

Hello Fluent

There are a few things in your long texts that don't add up. Let's start with the price you claim was our original intention. I believe we answered you on one of the forums you usually write on. We told you it was a lie. We never planned to release it at 60, euros, dollars or pounds. Never. And although the final price tag doesn't depend on us exclusively, given that it's being sold on retail stores as well, it was NEVER discussed among us to have that kind of price tag. We told you that. Why do you insist on something you know is not true? Because you read something somewhere?

In fact, after receiving the game that you didn't pay for (you received it for free after we sent some keys to beta testers), a game that has a campaign well over 40 hours, you played it for a grand total of 20 minutes.

Even so, we always accept all comments regarding our games, but it is strange when you focus on the team and the company. We believe that this happens because you don't know us very well.

We're a team of developers. We love videogames. We can't always create the game the wished we could and, thankfully, we've been evolving one game at a time. Contrarily to what's been discussed in this thread, this is our second game. We've developed others, yes, but it was contract work: we are hired to create a game with certain specifications and budget. We do what we're asked. We hand over the product, we're paid if the game meets its requirements, they publish the game. This should go without saying: we can't add other features, we can't improve games we worked on before unless we're asked to do so by the owner of the IP and the publisher. So, @mughug and @svenevil should you have any feedback related to games we previously worked on, like Moto GP 13, WRC 3, WRC 5, Lichdom, etc, please contact their publisher. If they decide to act on your suggestions or complains, they'll just need to contact us - or any other dev team! - to make it happen.

Moving on, we've been improving. We've started publishing. And we do want to make it right, even though there are always going to be some bumps on the road. If bigger, elder, more powerful studios make mistakes, we're very certain we'll make a few along the way. but we try to improve. We try to listen. We try to make gamers feel they're heard. Even if all we get from some of them is 25 rants and negative reviews after 20 minutes of play. You're entitled your feedback. We could point you in the general direction of where to go and say "Hey, there's a lot more gameplay than that. You DO have abilities you can use during combat and IF you happen to finish the tutorial you'll get to see them". But given the inaccuracy of the rants, we can't really argue with that.

What we CAN do, however, is to show you who we are and what we do. So, Fluent, we'd like to invite you to visit us here at Portugal. You'll get to know the country and the beautiful cities of Porto and Gaia, where we have our studio. We'll give you a day tour of the studio. You'll meet the team, you'll have lunch and dinner with us, you'll get to meet the guys that created Demons Age and you'll get to ask or tell them anything you like. Most of the team is working on other projects, but a part of it is still working with Demons Age, creating the content we still want to see in the game and fixing the bugs that've been pointed out.

If you decide to accept this invitation, please send an email to pr@bigmoonstudios.com and we'll arrange the details of your visit and schedule a date. We'd love to have you here.

Best regards,
Arkainos Dec 10, 2017 @ 2:04pm
Don't understand why people try and take it as a personal crusade to try and ruin small studios. I have watched some videos of it in action and it's not a bad game. There are worse, Torment Numenera comes to mind. Chunks of content ripped out of that game from backer promises. Andromeda? need I say more. It's the big companies that try to fist us without asking that should have your passion and attention, not little studios that make a pretty descent game with 40+ hours of gameplay for 30 bucks. Maybe you would enjoy SW battle(micro fisting)front 2.

White knighting for a game you don't even own, for "devs" that have never put out a decent game. Bravo

You mean like CodeHatch and StarForge??

The reason is simple...... for the bad ones.

Too many small and big developers/publishers have ripped off customers one way or another on Steam and Valve are reluctant to police it as it cuts into their profit.

We are looking at nearly 5,000 games released on Steam just this year. And decent developers are not happy because it means their good games are lost in all those other games.

That would mean there were more games released this year on Steam than in the eight years between 2006 and 2014. Pretty staggering..... and no-one is policing the quality of the goods, etc.

Every Tom, ♥♥♥♥ and Harry is jumping onto Steam thinking it is a nice money maker and standards have dropped so much since Steam first came out. And even developers are saying Steam Direct is worst then Greenlight.

So it is left up to us, the customers to raise the difficult questions.

And what do the press say on the matter:

'Why the glut? As we’ve explained previously, and as you’ve probably guessed both by looking at this chart and attempting to navigate Steam’s new release section, Valve has pretty much given up on any attempt at controlling what gets on Steam. The service has also become something of a gold rush for developers.'

That’s staggering, and no doubt has something to do with the launch of Steam Greenlight’s replacement, Steam Direct, in June. Direct was designed to make it easier for developers to release games on Steam, but Valve hoped the $100 fee would deter makers of asset flips and other shovelware products. This does not seem to have worked.

Too many developers/publishers seem to have their own 'personal crusade' to milk Steam for whatever they can and that is why...... at least some customers are willing to speak out in questionable cases.

"White Knighting"? Peddle your wares someplace else. Can I not like a game just by watching someone else play? Or maybe I have two accounts? I think you are looking for the SJW threads?

Where was Kotaku when Sony was allowing everyone and their Mother to make games for the PS2? As in Big Government, only the people should decide if they like something or not.
You nor Kotaku are the saviours of the industry. We as people have the right to purchase this game and within the 2 hour window, return it with Steam.

Now if you would like to play and finish the game, then write a review/critique of it with pros and cons, I would be happy to read it. Untill then you nor anyone else who has not played the game from beginning to end have the right to complain about this game. Period.

I enjoyed Lichdom very much, it was rough in some areas but over all an enjoyable experience. I like to make up my own mind on games that catch my eye. Research of a game is part of my process, not listening to raging lunatics screaming and yelling about a game that they haven't even got through the first act.

Same thing was happening with Spellforce 3 last week. People where complaining that there was no character creation and "OMG THIZ GAMEZ IZ ZUCKS!!!@%!$" You are able to create a character of your liking after the prolouge.

Now I'm not saying this game has an extensive character creation but it is up to us, the consumer to decide if we enjoy the game or not, by us trying it.

Also if you are comparing Starforge to this, you have no idea about genre of games.
